Sony HDR-FX1: High Definition Video Has Arrived!

Tom's Guide
9 February 2005
  • Summary: The Sony HDR-FX1 impressed us greatly. It's perfect in terms of image quality, has good sensitivity, and features professional-level ergonomics. Its innovations are such that it will remain a benchmark in the market for years. But does that mean you should make the move to high definition? You must remember that buying an FX1 implies investing not only in a pricy camera, but in a whole series of other expensive products.

Sony HDR-FX1: High Definition Without Breaking the Bank

Digital Home Thoughts
17 January 2005
  • Summary: Perhaps one of the most anticipated events in recent history, by semi-pro videographers is the upcoming release of Sony’s new HDR-FX1 3-CCD high definition camcorder. Many of us have been disappointed by the JVC offerings due to their decision to use only a single CCD, and have been anxiously awaiting a true 3-CCD camera. With Sony’s announcement earlier this year of such a product, many of us got really excited.
  • Pros: True 16x9 1080i high definition video using 3 CCD sensors;, Image quality is extremely high in all modes;, Excellent manual controls;, Many video format conversion options.
  • Cons: Being marketed as a 'consumer' camera, but is too complex, big, and expensive for a typical consumer;, A camera at this level should include XLR microphone inputs;, Low-light performance, though very good, is not quite as good as prior Sony cameras in this price range.

HDR-FX1 review

Digital Arts
7 February 2005
  • Excerpt: HDV has caused as much furore among video professionals as its predecessor DV did back in the late 1990s. Differing opinions over its usefulness have lead to heated arguments over whether it’s ‘pro’ or just for consumers, whether the MPEG-2 compression at its heart is better or worse than DV, and whether a compressed version of HD is a stupid idea in the first place.
  • Pros: Exceptional output quality at 1080i resolution. Shape and layout taken from PD170 and VX2100 camcorders, with quick access to most controls through buttons. Offers low-cost access to HD capture.
  • Cons: Limited manual controls. No XLR inputs. Z1 due soon. Menu system tricky to use due to button/screen positioning.

PC Advisor
7 January 2005
  • Summary: When digital camcorders first went on sale around a decade ago, they cost thousands. Amazingly, the first high-definition camcorder to arrive in the UK comes in at a similar price. Factor in inflation and Sony's HDR-FX1E seems cheap for such groundbreaking technology.
