Sony HDR-CX520V Camcorder Review

2 May 2013
  • Summary: At the top. The two most interesting features are the large touchscreen display and dual storage possibilities, of internal flash memory and on memory cards. Also of note is Full HD movies, the pictures up to 12 MP, the optical stabilizer, the supplied remote control, built-in GPS and HDMI input. Shame on the menu too amplii and the wheel of the focus very uncomfortable.
  • Pros: Sony G lens, Full HD, Memory Stick slot, internal memory, smile detection and smile shutter
  • Cons: Price; Objective; Manual Focus uncomfortable; Menu complicated, No microphone input

Sony HDR-CX5

22 November 2010
  • Summary: The geotagging capability remains mostly a novelty, but the top-notch video quality of the Sony Handycam HDR-CX500V and HDR-CX520V make them worthy options. Because internal memory is overpriced, the HDR-XR500V is the better deal of the two, though you may want to opt for a 2010 model that supports SD cards rather than Sony's Memory Stick.
  • Pros: Compact design; first-rate video quality and performance; geotagging videos is fun, if limited.
  • Cons: No SD card support; awkward control layout; no wind filter; no manual shutter speed, iris, or audio controls; expensive.

Sony HDR-CX520V Review

20 January 2010
  • Excerpt: It was hard walking the aisles at CES without tripping over mounds of flash memory camcorders like the Flip. Harder to find were higher-quality “real” camcorders with zoom lenses and much better high-definition (HD) performance. Oh, they were there all right – if you could fight your way through the crowds ogling 3D HDTV demos.
  • Pros: Compact, lightweight, Full AVCHD video, 64GB onboard memory, 12x optical zoom, Excellent OIS system and sound
  • Cons: Expensive, Flash stills fine, poor unless enough light, LCD should be better, No electronic viewfinder

Sony Handycam HDR-CX520V

13 November 2009
  • Excerpt: (1 items) Sony’s claiming two world firsts for its current crop of high-end HD camcorders, the first being a three-way optical image stabilizer (all its rivals offer two-way), which promises to reduce camera shake by up to 10 percent, and built-in GPS so you can geotag your movie as you shoot.
  • Pros: Good range of features including manual controls, Good video quality, Solid build
  • Cons: Geotagging feature didn’t work, Confusing touchscreen menu system, Odd manual dial location

Expert Review

2 October 2012
