Obsolete technology. Do not buy this camera

J. Horrell "rockcrawler", Amazon
26 December 2013
  • Summary: Unless you have a computer with 1394 (firewire) capability do not buy this camcorder. Firewire technology is obsolete as well so the chances of getting long term use out of this is non-exsistent. The DV to USB is only good for viewing on a monitor and does not allow for editing. Obsolete, don't even consider it.

Bad investment

Trailman, Amazon
26 October 2013
  • Summary: When I first bought this camera in 2007, it retailed for around $400. The DV tape technology was a bit awkward then and turned out to be short-lived. From today's perspective, it was a mad product strategy on part of the manufacturers. The complex tape loading mechanism, the many moving parts and their frequent failures, and the prohibitively high repair cost turn DV cameras into a liability today. Stand-alone decks were always expensive and never entered the mainstream.

LCD and USB challenged

Davina Hunter "dancing bookworm", Amazon
25 February 2013
  • Summary: When LCD screen dies, and trust me, it will, your camera and review settings are virtually impossible to use. The only off-screen accessible settings are the power on/off, REC (start/stop), easy. You will not be able to review your video. Nor will you be able to adjust camera settings or use the camera visual and audio editing features. The mini usb port promises much but will NOT deliver one second of video to your computer.

Not worth it

Bruce H. Douglass, Amazon
7 February 2012
  • Summary: I bought this to continue using Mini DV tapes and, for the first year it worked fine. Then abruptly, just after the warranty crumped out, the cassette door will not close. Quotes for repair equal or exceed the original cost. That's it for me with lightweight Sony products. However, I do need to accept some blame for not checking out the forums and complaints first on the Internet -- there are MANY people with this same problem and no solutions for this specific model.

Obsolete

Scottyxlr8, Amazon
13 February 2011
  • Summary: I bought this Camcorder a few years ago, just before losing my job. I used the USB streaming to transfer lower quality video to my computer for those years, and just purchased a nice Win7 64-bit computer with iLink (aka FireWire). The computer won't recognize the camera over iLink, and USB streaming isn't supported in Win7 at all, (and never has been for any 64-bit operating systems). Of course, their warranty is only for 90-days.

Junk

Monty B. Earl "builder", Amazon
28 February 2010
  • Summary: First I kept getting re-insert the tape messages, now it won't even load the tape. Also, it now keeps giving me re-attach power source messages. Have been very careful with it, it worked OK for about a year. This is my second Sony camcorder, it will be the last.

I returned it immediately

R. M. Soper, Amazon
6 October 2007
  • Summary: The product was so cheaply built that I thought for a minute I'd accidentally ordered a child's play camera. I returned it immediately.
