At $1,100 the Sony DCR-DVD505 is reasonably priced for a unit that offers so many benefits and features. The DVD505 is slotted to be Sony’s top of the line DVD camcorder, and it definitely fits the mold. Over the past year Sony has put a lot of attention into making their DVD camcorders stick out above and beyond the competition. So how does the Sony DCR-DVD505 stack up? Well, maybe not as good as you would have expected.

The DCR-DVD505 offers a ClearVID CMOS sensor. They claim that this sensor offers many benefits that the competition does not such as tilting pictures up to 45 degrees and also increasing the green pixels. In bright light situations it appears that the Sony DCR-DVD505 is dead on. You get clear performance with excellent colors. Unfortunately, there was some stair stepping in some cases even when the light was more than optimal.

In dim light the Sony DCR-DVD505 performed okay, but nothing that would stand out among the crowd. One of the biggest problems with this unit in low light was the high level of noise that it produced.

Just like all of Sony’s camcorders it is easy to handle the DVD505. In fact, with just a few minutes of time on your hands you would not have any problems learning how to do just about anything with this unit. The automatic controls on the Sony DCR-DVD505 are nearly perfect, but we do not particularly care for the LCD touch screen option.

There is no doubt that Sony thought the DVD505 would be the best camcorder available to the general public. While it is one of the best, it falls short of the VDR-D300 offered by Panasonic in many areas. Although the Panasonic may be better for some, unless you try out both you are doing yourself a disservice.
