In terms of looks and design, it’s head and shoulders above many of its rivals, but a clunky touch interface makes this a frustrating device to use, and both still and video quality are disappointing.     Samsung is so close on this one. My suggestions? Orient the camera like a camera, no mount adapters. Improve the automatic light sensitivity to adjust properly. Make the camera zoom capable on the HD setting. Move the capture buttons to the side of the camera away from the menu controls. Put real hinges on the AV and memory covers. Always: removeable back-up batteries which can be charged ahead of time. Add a lens cover. Read more

    I will not give this a bad review. IT is a really good product for the value. It just wasn't what I was expecting. IT has a great look and feel, super light, fits in your pocket with ease. Features are a bit basic and it lacks flash. If flash isn't a factor for you and you want basic features for a brief recording than this product is for you. Read more

The HMX-U10 also features 1920 x 1080 full high definition video recording capabilities, 10 megapixel digital image captures in an ultra-compact design that measures 56 x 103 x 15.5 mm (at 95 g). The camcorder also features a seven degree angled grip, time-lapse recording (for capture moments such as sun rise and a flower blooming), USB charging (through a computer), built-in intelli-studio that lets users edit images without having to install software to a PC, in-camera editting, H.264 video format support and one-touch upload the YouTube™ capability. The HMX-U10 retails for $199.99 and is available in September 2009.

Features

The HMX-U10 is an ultra compact camcorder that records in full-HD and takes 10 mega-pixel still photos. It also allows users to share content online with its one-touch “upload” button to YouTube™. The HMX-U10 is targeted at the consumer looking for portability in a HD camcorder. It offers full-HD video recording with 1920 x 1080 resolution with its 1/2.3 inch CMOS sensor that also supports 10 mega-pixel digital still images capture. This can all be reviewed on the camcorder’s two-inch LCD screen. The camcorder measures 56 mm x 103 mm x 15.5 mm and weighs 95 g including the battery. The HMX-U10 features Samsung’s built-in intelli-studio software, which is Samsung’s play-edit-sharing program that allows users to edit and play their video without having to install supporting software. Sharing content can also be done through the intelli-studio program as it uploads content to video-sharing Web sites. A one-touch “upload” button, available directly on the HMX-U10, provides a direct connection to YouTube™, reducing the number of steps needed to upload footage. The camcorder also allows basic on-camera editing, including the ability to split video files. The camcorder also features Samsung’s animated thumbnail feature that provides a way for users search for video clips. Each video clip saved on the camcorder is represented by a small thumbnail on the LCD screen which provides a short playback of the video when highlighted by a user as they scroll through the videos. The HMX-U10 also features a versatile charging system that lets users recharge the battery by either connecting the camcorder to the supplied AC adapter or via USB while the camcorder is connected to a computer.

    How does the HMX-U10 fare with a Mac? Anybody tried it? I'm not looking for a great camera, just something I can throw around, record stuff with and take out when I'm with friends, instead of taking my DSLR everywhere. Thanks!

    I use only Macs, and had no problem wing and handling the files (photo's are JPEG, movies are MP4 (Mpeg-4 video with H264 encoding). Photoshop and Quicktime Player respectively can handle these formats. f.bretschneider@xs4all.nl
