First Impressions Do Not Tell the Whole Story: Panasonic HDC-SD9 Camcorder

Personal Electronics buzz
11 August 2009
  • Excerpt: I really like the Panasonic HDC-SD9 from the moment I set my eyes on it. An HD camcorder that can fit in the palm of my hand and weighs less than ¾-pound. It knocked me out with first impressions. The appearance, SD slot, USB and HDMI output was exactly what I was looking for in a camcorder.

Panasonic HDC-SD9 review

best4reviews.com
15 November 2008
  • Summary: The Panasonic HDC-SD9 is small and perfectly formed, but appears more a triumph of design and engineering over performance - meaning that there are models out there (JVC's GZ-HD3) that will deliver better overall results for a similar price or a little bit more (£100+ in the case of the JVC).
  • Pros: Small yet well constructed, fast in operation, storage capacity expandable via larger SDHC media, easy to use and can be carried in the pocket
  • Cons: Storage via SD media only, picture and audio not as impressive as competing larger build models

Panasonic HDC-SD9-8GB

PC Magazine
18 October 2008
  • Conclusion: This camcorder is small and lightweight, but its video quality is below par.
  • Pros: Small form factor. Extremely lightweight. Dolby Digital 5.1 recording. Face detection.
  • Cons: Video quality is not as sharp as the competition. Struggles to adjust white balance when lighting changes. Mild purple fringing. Editing software is primitive. HDMI port is poorly placed.

Review: Panasonic Panasonic HDC-SD9

Wired
17 October 2008
  • Excerpt: Despite being released back in January of this year, the 1920 x 1080, 10x optical zoom SD9 is (still) the top performer. Touted by Panasonic as the world’s smallest full HD cam, its slimmed down profile makes it a real winner with the portability crowd.
  • Pros: Small, well-built design. Simple menu system. Top notch battery life.
  • Cons: Moving the joystick to the LCD bridled shooting ease. Shrunken size compromised comfort and usability.

Good Gear Guide.au
26 November 2008
  • Summary: The HDC-SD9 is an evolutionary upgrade of the SD5. While the majority of changes are arguably minor, they combine to lift the camcorder head-and-shoulders above its predecessor, not to mention the majority of competitors.
  • Pros: Ultra lightweight design, stunning 'full HD' video resolution, improved battery/SD card arrangement, solid still images mode, Face Detection technology
  • Cons: SDHC media not cheap, no external microphone jack
