  • Summary: Nice camera, picture is perfect, bit clumsy with the button design, but once you get the hang of it works great.

Great camcorder - editing software scarce

T. J. Sturm, Amazon
16 January 2008
  • Summary: I've had this camera for just under a year and have enjoyed it very much. Like other reviewers have mentioned, finding editing software for the AVCHD format used is a challenge. I use Adobe Premiere CS3 for editing but have to first convert any footage using Nero or other software.

Excellent camera

Leonid A. Medvinsky, Amazon
29 December 2007
  • Summary: The video quality of this camera is excellent. The only issues I have with the camera is the main control switch which is very uncomfortable and constraint of recording time by buttery.

Panasonic HDC-SD1 High Definition camera

Vincyman, Amazon
25 December 2007
  • Summary: I have used the Panasonic HDC-SD1 camera for over a month now and I am quite happy with the quality and sound of the videos. The camera performed flawlessly, however the battery barely lasted half an hour and there are no extended-time batteries available for sale.

So far so good

K. Smith, Amazon
10 December 2007
  • Summary: I have had my SD1 for about a week. I haven't tested it fully, but here are my first impressions: 1. Looks AWESOME when attached HDMI to my 50" plasma!!! 2. Auto iris tends to gain up in low light (which is what it is supposed to do)- introducing noise in the video - adjusting the gain manually is...

Fine Camera

Barry M., Newegg
3 November 2007
  • Summary: I'm keeping the faith for AVC format.
  • Pros: Great picture & sound quality. Image stabilization is pretty good. Unit is perfect size for amature use.
  • Cons: Obsolete already. HDC-Sd5 already released. Backup battery already hard to find. No viewfinder. Sometimes hard to see screen in bright light. AVC editing is a pain (still no decent editor). I use nero7 which is ok. AVC editing needs high spec PC - beware. HD-writer is pretty poor. mt2s files are ...

Very good with flaws

Joshua S. Rose "j rosey", Amazon
1 November 2007
  • Summary: This camcorder takes very good quality videos. I have been impressed with the resolution and colors. There are three main drawbacks to the SD-1, as I see it: 1) ergonomics. The camera does not comfortably sit straight in the hand, but rather, rolls over to a slightly tilted position unless you apply...

One way to play the AVCHD files

Moishe Pipik, Amazon
24 July 2007
  • Summary: One challenge with these AVCHD camcoders is how to play the files on something other than the camcorder! I received my Panasonic HDC-SD1 yesterday through Amazon. On a whim, I burned the transport stream files to a DVD-R (as a DVD ROM, not as a video-format DVD), and put it in my Playstation3.

panasonic hdc-sd1

t f., Newegg
22 July 2007
  • Summary: attached too fast, Iknew there was a problem. it asked me for an appropriate file to open with. meaning you have to burn to dvd or convert file? so I have to upload on laptop, save to dvd, upload dvd to desktop then save file to harddrive, then attempt to attach file for email.
  • Pros: small, light weight, toggle makes searching for media easy, auto shutter, and of course hd quality
  • Cons: I was very excited to get it out of box and use, that was the easy part. as soon as you install the hd writer program is when the problems begin. first thing you need is adobe not a problem most come standard on pc. then a window opens up stating this program only works on 2 operating systems. gu...

Wow..almost.

Daniel H., Newegg
10 June 2007
  • Summary: There are more editors coming available to handle this format. Pinnacle, Ulead ( it forces display resolution at 1024 X 768 to though ), Nero 7. Sony Vegas 7e supports the AVCHD format.. but only for their cameras now... but say Panasonic cams will be added later.
  • Pros: Hi def, comes with 4 Gig SD card which gets you 40mins of high def recording, good solid feel compared to other hidef cameras that seemed to "plastically", great lens with clear optical zoom, won't have to worry about a hard drive failure!
  • Cons: Software that comes with it is pretty useless. It forces me to change resolution to even run it. Must be 1024 X 768... my 50" DLP runs best at 1280 X 720. Looks cheezy when I ran it on another computer anyway, but you really don't need it as you can buy an SD HC card reader and drag your video fi...
