Summary: In my Kodak Zi8 review, I gave the unit a poor "star" rating ... but I need to clarify. My primary focus for models I review is on their digital still image photography capabilities first, and then on the other features of the digital cameras, such as video capabilities.
For the Zi8, Kodak has emphasized digital video features, including HD video capabilities. The Zi8's still image capabilities are simplistic, very limited, and well below average.
Pros: Extremely easy to use, Digital zoom is available to use while shooting video, Fast response times, Colors in still photos are realistic
Cons: Only 5.3 megapixels for still image photos, No flash or lamp; unuseable in low light, Close-up focus is poor, Very limited still image photo options, Aimed at someone wanting a pocket camcorder with simplistic still image photo options

Kodak Zi8 1080p HD Pocket Video Camera Long-Term Review
11 January 2011
Conclusion: The Kodak Zi8 is without a doubt one heck of a pocket HD camcorder and I doubt there is anything remotely similar that can outperform it at it's under $200 price range. This is without a doubt Editor's Choice material despite little shortcomings. Best of all is that you'll be seeing more videos in the future reviews on this website with the Kodak Zi8 being used because it's such a fantastic pocket HD camcorder.

Life In A House of Blue !
1 November 2010
Excerpt: I was more than excited to receive the KODAK Zi8 Pocket Video Camera just in time for my trip to Izeafest ! I must say this Pocket Video Camera did not disappoint ! Besides capturing great high-quality full 1080p High Definition video it is also take 5 MP HD still pictures. This is great for me! I love still photos and video but always have to decided what camera to take since with 3 boys space is always limited. Well not any more I can have both with one device.
Summary: Final Thoughts
This pocket video camera is a great addition to the line of digital video cameras from Kodak. We already looked at the Zx1 and they do have the Zi6. The Zi8 adds the Full HD 1080p recording and some other things that many people would have wanted on the Zi6 and Zx1. One of the biggest additions is the inclusion of an external microphone jack. This means you can connect a microphone to the Zi8 and record audio in stereo.
Pros: Easy to use, Shoots in 1080p, 720p, and 720p at 60 fps, External microphone jack
Excerpt: Pocket camcorders are slowly beginning to find their share of space amongst flip camcorders. They are affordable, sleek and unlike flip camcorders can be easily pocketed. That’s not the only positive aspect about them. Rather than being hard drive based these little beauties come with either a respectable amount of built-in memory or they can be further expanded via the memory expansion slot – provided they have an expansion slot.
Excerpt: Are you looking to get a pocket camcorder? There are numerous options out there but if you want to go for the best pocket video camera then you should definitely be looking at the Kodak Zi8. Read on to understand why the Kodak Zi8 is worth your money!
Summary: Increasing the gain gets the Zi-8 closer to the competition’s generally good sound. The truth is that the video and audio from the Zi-8 is far from stellar, but for this class of device, you’re not going to be making a masterpiece. What the Zi-8 does do is take the pocket cam to the next level. Perhaps with the Zi-9 or Zi-10, we’ll see the end of the camcorder completely.
Pros: Replaceable battery, 1080p, included cables and charger, and SDHC support make the Zi-8 king.
Cons: Slightly bulky; audio is not sensitive; UI is slightly confusing.
Conclusion: With 1080p video, 5-megapixel still image capture, and more features than we've seen in any other pocket video camera, the Zi8 follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, earning our Editors' Choice.
Pros: Nice price. Records 1080p video. 5-megapixel still image capture. Face detection, electronic image stabilization, and macro mode. Expandable memory. External mic port. Ships with an HDMI cable.
Cons: Jerky zoom. Subpar still image quality. Mediocre built-in mic. Hyper-sensitive buttons. Can get very hot with extended use.
Conclusion: We had our pick of the litter when it came to mini HD camcorders to use for shooting our on-the-run coverage of CES 2010 , but we walked the halls with Kodak’s Zi8 at the ready. A combination of superior video quality, features and a reasonable price make the Zi8 a clear standout from the competition, even if its looks lag a bit behind some of the super-sleek and customizable cameras from Cisco’s Flip brand.
Pros: True 1080p video resolution, Superior image quality, Electronic image stabilization (EIS), External microphone input, Accepts inexpensive SD cards up to 32GB, Easy to use, Flexible built-in USB arm
Cons: Larger than competitors, EIS can’t smooth all jitters, Lukewarm ArcSoft software package
