Summary: I will start off saying I am not A pro when it comes to cameras. I have read all kinds of info and posts on this camera trying to get a good photo out of it. This camera can take perfect high quality full of detail pictures if you use tele macro setting and are extremely close to what your taking a picture of. You would see carpet fibers if you took a picture of your floor. If you take other pictures they will be very grainy/fuzzy.
Summary: THIS is an amazing camera- BUT- It does not work with a mac.. you can get the files to the desktop, but the sound is separate.. trying to splice the sound back to the video is next to impossible. (and I'm a mac geek..) I bought some software from some Japanese site, claiming to translate the MPEG2 format but it was basically a joke.. Apple has a $39.00 MPEG2 plugin for QT that should work, but it did not.. Basically DO NOT GET THIS IF YOU ARE ON A MAC..
Summary: I have since figured out how to convert the files to mpg. through the supplied program. however this is a tedious task. to convert the files into a more useable format before using them in another program. I am very aggravated by this. Why wouldn't you (jvc) make a product that can be universally used easily. As someone who is a professional photojournalist, this problem makes implementing this piece of equiptment into my arsenal a pain in the ass and a waste.
Summary: I was looking for a camcorder to replace my old Panasonic PV-L757 (VHS-C) camcorder but was overwhelmed by the number of available choices. Also, the Olympus D450Z still camera that I bought in 1999 is more than a little dated so upgrading to a better camera was important. When I spotted a small writeup of the GZMC500 in "Wired" magazine I thought "This is the new camera I've been looking for." "I can kill two birds with one stone.
Summary: I'm disappointed in the QUALITY. However, once I realized that the quality is great at 320x240 (vids/pics), I decided to keep it. PROS: 1. Re-sizing = improved quality. Great for web/multimedia. 2. The camcorder size and design can't be beat...yet. 3. The discreet factor. There are MUCH better quality camcorders, but they LOOK like camcorders whereas this looks like a digital still. 4. The COOL factor.
Summary: 1-Not the greatest in low light. 2-Terrible Still camera (grainy / bad quality... a sub $200 camera can do much better) 4-Not the best software (can't do wide format) 5-No Firewire 6-No Remote 7-A MiniDV camera can do better Pro: 1-Small (tiny) 2-Cool toy 3-Easy to use
Summary: I bought it partly because of the size, but also because of the promised 5-megapixel still-picture resolution. This is just a BIG lie! The true picture size is about 1-megapixel! So pictures larger than stamp-size are a problem. As a camcorder it's perfect for use on "normal" screens, but for combined use as a still-picture cam look elsewhere.
Summary: You need to be very comfortable with computers to buy this machine. It's all very well taking the video but its very frustrating not being able to handle the software. I don't think the still picture quality is very good.
Pros: Tiny machine, all on a hard drive
Cons: Found the computer software very difficult to operate, it took a year to burn my first DVD and that was only after I called in a computer expert to help me
Excerpt: "...I was referred to the JVC web-site constantly. Having looked ont he web-site already, I knew the information about the software wasn't there. If I had used my own money I would be disappointed. I upgraded from a Panasonic DV-tape, because I wanted to remove the playback time needed to capture from a tape device, but the slight extra quality hasn't been worth it. Overall, I think it would have been better to wait to get this type of device until ...
Pros: small, light, superb quality image/sound
Cons: r/hand only, no fold out panel, fiddly controls
Pros: Piccola, accattivante design, buona qualità immagini in piena luce .
Cons: Critica funzionalità, componentistica delicata, cardiopalmo per improvvisi malfunzionamenti !
