Summary: I have read some of the negative reviews posted for this camera as well as the HM320 and HM340 (which are identical cameras with built in flash memory). First, I think the "haters" need to understand where this product is positioned in the market. This is a mid-level consumer grade HD camcorder, that has been market down to ~$200, making it an entry level price.
Pros: It gives good video and focusing with good light, 4 quality settings, 3 hours on a single charge, easy to use menus, good audio, small enough to fit in a pocket, dual SD card slots, time lapse and it works with upgraded Window Live Movie maker.
Cons: My wish list includes manual focus, a microphone input, a headphone input, better image stabilization, better low light video quality, sharper still images, and the ability to focus in low light.
Summary: Just a point that I noticed while researching cameras- although the product description mentions the "Super LoLux with Back-illuminated CMOS Sensor" this particular camera does not have this sensor. The "big brother" does, and then this is listed under the advantages: http://www.amazon.com/JVC-GZ-HM550-High-Definition-Camcorder/dp/B0032FPYHY.
Summary: This is a good camcorder for its price. Value for money as it produces High Def Video files (MTS). The Only issue is trying to Shoot in the dark as there is no feature for lighting or flash to take photos, however the camcorder can be set to function in place of poor lighting. The video file format is MTS(High Def Video File Format) the software CD provided with the camcoder is OK but does not support conversion of MTS File format to AVI,MPG,WMV(Low def File formats).
