Summary: to answer your first question. I got this over the gopro because of its ease of use. just slide that big switch forward and you're ready to rock. the other big factor was that you didnt need a stupid case to keep water out and I didn't want to have a camera with a mic that's stuck inside a plastic chamber. seemed stupid to me. upon my first snowboarding run I quickly found out that the mic doesn't add much... all you hear is overwhelming wind noise.
Summary: I have been owning a bunch of ContourHD 1080 units. This was a try of something different. While it is a good product like the others and yes, I do like them more then GoPro. Been used and beat up in the field. Slim and nice. How ever I give this version only 4 stars, because the battery is not an independent unit. I have a stock of spare batteries for COuntor HD, which make it very convenient when you are in the field. This has to be recharged all the time.
Summary: I used to have the original Contour Roam and when it got broken I bought this one instead. I have one for about 2 months and I ordered a second one knowing Contour company is out of business and whatever I can buy is leftover stock. The price is a bit random, jumping up and down like a crazy monkey. That makes it very hard to evaluate the value.
Summary: I wanted an action camera, but did not want to drop $300.00 to $400.00 on a unit. Roam, even though for the time-being defunct, got stellar reviews from those that had bought one. I found this unit for a good entry-level price. While not the most technically advanced it is a robust camera that basically lets one record action hand-free. The biggest drawback is that the battery is not removable to charge and a spare battery is a non-starter.
Summary: Camera has nice sharp videos. Compact, and really like that the user can mount the camera at 90 degree increments and rotate the lens so that the videos are in my case anyway upright or vertical. The Software ... Storyteller however is somewhat cumbersome and will not open all the time.
Summary: The contour roam 2 was amazing! I only give it four stars instead of five because we used it on a Tough Mudder course and the sound was muffled after about 4 obstacles(obviously mud was in the mic). It would be an improvement to incase the mic somehow, but other than that it was great! The picture, even in the 720 setting was still amazing! Battery life in this setting was great.
Summary: The camera works great, it's really great that you can use it in water up to 1 m without any special case. But there is a very important thing you should know. COUNTOUR Co. is bankruptcy. What does this mean? Well, first of all I don't know where we can claim for warranty. Second of all, any questions will be answered by... NO ONE.
Summary: i would have rated this a 5 but i had trouble downloading the manual and the "storybook" editing feature. i finally found a link to download the manual. however the editing software was not available so i can't change anything like resolution,. i am going to call the company and find out why, but in the meantime i cannot give a perfect score.
Good camera but don't expect any warranty or back up from Contour Inc

Summary: Having owned a Contour GPS - and experienced all the attendant "issues" this is much beteer. No power button hassles, instant on (well 2-4 secs) and waterproof to 1m - so will assume rainproof! Battery life is better too and it doesn't stop just cos you went over a bump on the bike (like the Contour GPS did) Picture quality is below Go Pro Black but then so is price. With Contour Inc calling in receiver these cameras are getting sold off - making them a relative bargain.
