Question: How can I record to an external hard drive?

What do I need in order to do this? I go through two tapes a week but I don't have time to upload them every time, and I don't want to wear down my tape rewinder. How can I record externally?

I've been using my MacBook with the firewire cable. I use Final Cut Express and record directly to the Mac. I haven't tried my 1T external yet as the target drive. Thats next.
