Summary: I've learned that both the "Canon XL-1 & Gl-1" digital camcorders are great gear to get a person started with DV(Digital Video) recording. It's about the best out there in my opinion as far as DV Camcorders for creating simi/and pro broadcasting for the pricing of DV's today. Sony and other manufactures have very good DV's also but, I was more impressed with the Canon models.
Pros: The quality of the picture on both.
Cons: The audio is good on the GL-1 but has motor noise. The XL-1 has very good audio.
Excerpt: "In 2011, I purchased a Canon XL1. This camera was used for the recording of programs in my church. The video quality of the camera is outstanding, and the durability is excellent. The camera does have auto focus adjustment, which gives a noob the opportunity to use the camera effectively. The color saturation gives a vivid natural display to the videos. The only challenge I personally had with the camera was trying to look through the viewfinder to ...
Pros: durability, video clarity, auto focus adjustment
Excerpt: "I just recently bought the XL1 because I was going to make a movie and my VX-2000 needed another camera. Once I received the order it was love at first sight. The camera is so easy to use I even let my 10-year old son use it. The camera is not too heavy, but at times it may get uncomfortable if your holding it, but that can easily be solved with a tripod. The camera has an option for widescreen and fullscreen. Both have amazing video quality. The ...
Pros: Great video quality, very easy to upload onto computer, not too heavy, and easy to understand
Excerpt: "...at such a reasonable price. The Canon XL1 offers users superb picture quality, excellent audio, and enough options to make nearly every camera operator happy. All this is fitted into a small carriable and affordable package. The canon XL1 comes with a huge range of options to capture exactly the shot you want. At first these may all seem a bit complex, but amatuers will find find the controls easy to use with only a little practice and there ...
Pros: Excellent picture quality, flexible controls, ease of use, affordable
Cons: Can get a little heavy as it only has a partial shoulder rest .
Excerpt: "...will tell you that the Canon XL1 isn't much cop as a serious video camera. When they do, ask them what they do for a living. They will all, without exception, be professional cameramen/women, and will almost certainly have mortgaged their house, kids and dog to buy a brodcast camera (Typical price 2nd hand £20,000)with which to ply their trade. The reason they are so scathing of the Canon XL1? THEY ARE JEALOUS! Why are they jealous? Because ...
Pros: Pro quality at amateur price . Interchangable lenses, wealth of features, all of which have some worth, and more . . . much, much more .
Cons: Ah . . . let me think . . . there's . . . no, that's on there too . . . Pro cameramen and women are likely to mug you . that's about it really .
Excerpt: "...the smaller DV camcorders. Luckily Canon have included an optical stabiliser, a device that attempts to correct your wobbly shooting. As mentioned earlier, you can change the lenses on the XL1 so, unlike other cameras, if the lens gets damaged it's not the end of the world. This feature is especially important for professionals - it's now possible to buy lenses that give wide-angles and even record in 3D (but you still need those special glasses). There's ...
Canon XL1: Broadcast quality video in a neat MiniDV package
21 March 2001
Summary: We have been using the Canon XL-1 for around two years and the unit has certainly exceeded all expectations. Anyone looking for a flexible DV camera should certainly take a good look at the XL-1 as it is the most capable Digital Video camera that I have used so far. I have used the XL-1 for a variety of tasks including equipment testing, macro video, media coverage (speeches etc.), leisure footage and action events.
Pros: Quality, Flexible, Professional, Takes advantage of EOS lens technology, Hotshoe option
Excerpt: "I am a freelance director and I bought the camera so that I might be able to use it for shoots etc as a second camera - and I think it's fantastic. First it looks great. It looks like a film camera, sleek design. The controls are easy to operate, the picture quality is superb, and the sound is great. The tapes are easy to load, and the zoom functions are unrivalled. The one downside is that there is a digitial focus ring which means that manual ...
