Review Summary
Are you a videographer who is in the need of a top of the line HD camera? If so, the Canon XH A1 is a sure bet to win over your heart. Not only is this camera small enough to suit all of your needs, but it also has a lot to offer in performance as well. While this is not a good fit for the everyday casual user, for wedding videographers or independent film makers it may be the best option for your needs.
Video performance is very good with the Canon XH A1 thanks to the inclusion of three 1/3” CCDs. In auto mode, the colors appear pretty much steady across the board. While this may not excite consumers, it is most definitely a huge benefit offered by the Canon XH A1. In bright light you will not be able to shoot noise free, but it is safe to say that things will not get too far out of control.
As far as low light performance is concerned it appears that the Canon XH A1 is superior to anything else on the market. Both color performance and definition are not perfect, but with that being said they are not nearly as bad as some of the competition. Noise increases a bit over bright light shooting, but not so much that it is extremely noticeable.
The Canon XH A1 is much smaller than its XL H1 counterpart, and this has presented some issues. For instance, a lot of buttons were forced to be crammed into a smaller area. This may bother you at first, but once you become used to the operation you should be able to adjust.
If you are looking to switch to a HD camera, the Canon XH A1 may be the right choice for you. With a small design and great performance in bright and dim light, the Canon XH A1 outperforms most of the competition.
For the professional and serious non-professional alike, the XH A1 combines a wealth of features with the outstanding performance of a 3 CCD, High Definition camcorder. If you need HD SDI, Gen Lock,…

Canon XH A1 HDV Camcorder
Reviewer: soundandvisionmag.com21 May 2007The Canon XH A1 HDV camcorder sells for more than twice the price of high-end consumer HD camcorders, and its comparatively big body and 4.5-pound weight make it a hassle to whip out for birthday parties or backyard vignettes. But its wide array of sophisticated manual features and pro-level inputs make it an incredible value for anyone looking to move beyond basic shooting. The cam's exceptional Auto modes also enable you to quickly and easily grab great-looking high... Read more

The Canon XH A1 (Specs, Recent News, $3279.99) is poised to win over a host of videographers looking to make the switch to HD. Billed by Canon as the XL H1 (Specs, Recent News, $7947.89) in miniature, we can tell you that the statement is hardly exaggeration. The manual control suite is simply outstanding and the performance is essentially identical to its big brother. Message boards are already abuzz with praise for its low light performance. 30F and 24F frame rates,... Read more

I just got this camcorder about 2 weeks ago and I'm very impressed. It's a Big step from the GL 2. It's bigger and heavier though than I expected. since there is not really any reviews about it I was a little concerned about the low light image quality. I'm using also Sony FX 1 but I needed more in camera gamma and color matrix image control. I put both next to each other in a dark room on same settings f1.6 & 1/30th of the second (Manual) and I was very pleased with ... Read more

Digital SLR vs. Rangefinder
The only EVF's I've ever looked through that rival an OVF are the one's on high-end video cams such as the Canon XH A1 or XLH1 and Sony FX series. I've used Canon S series and Panasonic FZ series compacts and they don't come close to what you can see with a good OVF. -- -Scott http://www.flickr.com/photos/redteg94/
