Summary: The image quality is sometimes not sharp, sometimes a bit fuzzy in Hi Def mode. I always use my tripod when recording. A mild bump on the tripod will cause the camera to skip a few frames. 13 months after I bought it, the lens cover doesn't open when I turn on the camera. Typical foreign junk. I changed my review, added a star, based on Canon's excellent service. They fixed the lens cover for free, even though it's 1 month past the warranty.
Summary: Let me start out by saying that this camera is probably one of or the best consumer camcorders on the market. The HV30's incredible image quality and low light performance is unmatched by any other camcorders I have seen or worked with. The 24p mode is spectacular for creating a Hollywood Style image similar to the quality produced by professional film cameras.
Summary: The quality of the picture recorded on this camera is superb but unfortunately the sound quality is poor. Even with an investment in an external microphone and wireless microphones, the tape picked up some background "fuzz" from the machinery and it took a lot of post-production work to fix it up. If you care about sound quality, this is a frustrating camera.
Summary: "Bear in mind this camera (HV30) has not been produced since 2009" was what Canon UK service said when I complained about their poor performance. And now I know why! The camera was fine for both sound and image quality, up to the point after only 24 months when the control board gave up the ghost. I had to buy a quick replacement: well, surprise surprise, it only lasted 24 months before the sound and the main board gave out.
