Excerpt: Canon HG10 HDD Camcorder has some amazing functions that make me feel in awe. The features are cool and awesome and the only disadvantage would be the heavy feel to this bulky item. It is very HEAVY! And a lot of times, I feel my hands feeling the plunge of carrying this heavy set around. But I have no other complaints besides this. There are USB cable of course and the wireless remote function is a real baby bonus.
Excerpt: This new hard disk drive camcorder from Canon is beautiful! It's very compact in size and it's even equipped with a 40GB Hard drive. It's capable of recording upto 15 hours of High-Definition video! The lense on this beauty is a crisp canon 10x zoom that captures imagery at a crystal-clear 1920 x 1080 resolution on a full HD CMOS sensor. The HG10 also has a miniSD card slot, allowing you to take still photos at 3.1-megapixel resolution.
Pros: Good HD quality. Simple shooting controls. Feels comfortable in your hand. nice LCD screen and plenty of decent PC/TV connectivity options.
Cons: Switching from camcorder to camera modes (both to shoot and view) could be a bit easier. It should come with a shoulder strap (have to buy it separate). Picks up wind a bit more than you'd want but not intolerable.
Summary: Overall I've enjoyed this camera, but there are a couple of shortcomings:
1. AVDHD codec (.m2ts file extention)is not supported by the majority of popular players and editing software, including WMP and quicktime. Additoinally, the software included with the camera, which ostensibly provides basic viewing and editing/disc authoring functions, is terrible to the point of being virtually useless.
Summary: I was looking for a Camcorder that: a) Did both still images and video reasonably well b) Gave me the ability to walk into any event with only one device to carry (kids soccer games to parties to a 2 week vacation) c) Easy to use, with good picture quality d) Minimal hassles all the way from shooting the video/stills to downloading and modifying the video/stills. d) Wasn't bleeding edge! So, I was paying through my nose. e) Wouldn't be outdated in a matter of a year.
Summary: So far, I haven't had any major problems with this camera. I am new with HD camcorders. The video quality for this camcorder is quite excellent. Transferring video over to my computer works fast and well. I have not tried making DVDs using the program provided. I am disappointed I could not use other video editing software. The other drawback is the location of the power bottom; it is hard to turn on and off the camcorder with the fingers of the hand holding the camera.
