Sony HDR-CX12 If you put the bodies of the Canon HF11 and Sony HDR-CX12 side-by-side (and you weren't nitpicking camcorder experts like us) you'd probably have a hard time telling them apart. The size, shape, and color are so similar you'd think that the companies worked on them together. A closer look reveals that the Sony CX12 is actually the better design. Read more

This model is especially versatile because it allows dual memory card recording, plus playback via HDMI and USB. The audio quality is just as impressive as video recording, although Canon took a step backward on the wind filter. Although this camcorder is expensive, it is more affordable than most models in its class and has much better quality as well. It's not perfect, but for the price, it comes pretty close. Read more

Small, easy to get hold of and with the best quality video around at the moment, the Canon HF11 is our current top pick for a flash memory based camcorder. Read more

    • Excellent detail in videos, Easy to use, Powerful optical stabilization, Upgraded storage capacity (32 GB), Plenty of connectivity options
    • Poor handling of electronic noise, No real wide angle, No electronic viewfinder, Software incompatible with Mac OS X, 24 Mbis/s a little dubious

Like its sibling the HF10, Canon's flash-based Vixia HF11 delivers excellent HD video quality and performance in a tiny package. However, the HF11 delivers a bit more value for its lower price. Read more

    • Excellent video quality; fast focus; compact, attractive, and comfortable design.
    • Wind filter not as dependable as previous Canon models; manual focus pretty useless.

I am writing this review after 2 yrs of usage, very heavy in past few months. Overall, excellent camcorder for shooting HD movies - crystal clear display of videos and photos. I considered Sony while purchasing this but did not buy Sony 'coz of proprietary memory cards. Controls are easy to handle with left hand. Cons: battery life < 1 hr, occasional heat up after 30 mins of constant usage Canon has clearly overtaken Sony in camcorder quality! Read more

The Vixia HF11 is so light and handy, no internal moving parts and very user friendly. It takes very good quality video and can shoot decent footages even in low light conditions. You'll need to buy a directional microphone because the built-in mic is very sensitive to sound that it easily pick up various conversations, noise & sounds around you. It has good image stabilization feature but its always better to mount it on a tripod to get steady shots. Read more

This has to be one of the best personal camcorders under $1000. There are too many reviews comparing this camera to professional and prosumer camcorders! Of course this isn't going to produce the same quality as a $4000 camera! And editing is a breeze with final cut. Just long and transfer, no need to render after dropping it in the timeline!
