Summary: Canon's Vixia HF R50 is a fantastic little camcorder that films some truly great HD footage on a budget. However, some of the camera's features appear to be half-baked and hinder the end-user experience. -------------------- DESCRIPTION & USE: The Vixia HF R50 (I'll simply refer to the camera as the 'R50' from here out) is a compact little camera that compares nicely to similar products from Samsung, Sony and other camera manufacturers.
Summary: This camera is easy to use right out of the box. Charged and ready to go. I haven't looked at the instruction manual yet, but have been able to record and even set up the baby monitor mode without it. So far I recommend it.
Summary: This Canon VIXIA HF R50 Camcorder produces excellent quality video and has a lot of advanced features that makes this very worthwhile, if you have the patience to figure out how to use them. We professionally produce instructional videos and have used a lot of consumer through professional grade equipment.
Forget the Wireless and You Have a Decent BTS Cam (Review from video shooter's standpoint)

Summary: OK, this camera does have a few problems, wireless interface being the top dog, but let's look at the good stuff first. I got this camera (yes, through Vine, but I really do video work) as a "2nd Angle" or "Behind The Scenes" or a "Shoot superwide B-roll so when our main shots don't fit every minute of audio we can cut to this footage in a pinch" camera. I do shoot projects with a Canon 5D Mark III and Canon L lenses, so obviously a direct comparison isn't fair.
Summary: Small inexpensive camcorders are becoming a bit of a rare commodity. They are quickly being replaced by smartphones and DSLR cameras. All have their advantages.... DSLR cameras offer advanced optics, and while they work well, they are not perfectly equipped for video. A nice smartphone (i.e. an iPhone 5) is extremely convenient and easy to use, but lacks the optics and video modes that you may want in a camcorder. The alternative to both is the camcorder...
Decent camcorder for the pricepoint with good stabilization

Summary: We have experience with an older model of this camera, Canon VIXIA HF M50 Full HD 10x Image Stabilized Camcorder . This one has a much better zoom. Built-in tripod mount differs - the older camera's tripod mount was forward, and the new one is centered. I'm not sure if this is a change for the better, but it's a change, so I note it. Setup is straightforward. Open the camera, charge it, and set the date and time. You're almost ready to go.
