Canon offers several units in its DVD line, and the DC40 is the newest to hit the market. The DC40 is meant to be the top of the line offering from Canon, and it is safe to say that it is quite competitive. While the Canon DC40 may not have all of the features of its competition, the ones that it does have are quite impressive.

The most important thing to consider when making a purchase is video quality. The Canon DC40 thrives in this area thanks to a ½.8” CCD. Believe it or not, this is larger than anything that the competition has to offer. Overall, the Canon DC40 has top of the line color performance which is sure to be perfect for any amateur. The only drawbacks are that the picture quality is not as sharp as it could be, and stair stepping is evident in some areas.

Over the years low light performance has never been one of Canon’s stronger points. And it is safe to say that things did not change very much with the new DC40. It managed to bring in an average amount of light, but we were expecting it to do much better. Fortunately, noise did not increase as much as we were expecting either.

Although Sony may be the king of automatic controls, the Canon DC40 is not far behind. Shifting in and out of auto mode is a piece of cake, and this is perfect for the new user. As far as handling is concerned the Canon DC40 definitely disappointed. Last year’s DC20 was much lighter and smaller. Although a heavier design does make the Canon DC40 feel sturdier than past models.

All in all, this camcorder has a lot to offer. At around $699 the Canon DC40 offers a good level of performance enhanced by plenty of features.
