Canon, the tortoise of the camcorder industry, has finally chosen to enter into the race with the hare. The DC10 and DC20 mark their first foray into the DVD camcorder market, currently dominated by Sony. Their large imager size (1/4" and 1/3.9", respectively) promise some considerable performance, and their stylish and slender bodies indicate superb handling and portability. But how did they do running the Camcorderinfo.com battery of tests? Read more

The Canon DC10 is one of two camcorders marking Canon’s first entry into the DVD camcorder market (the other being the D20). In the past, DVD cams have largely proven to be convenience-oriented gizmos with little to offer in the way of manual control. While some of them take decent video, they can rarely compete with comparably priced MiniDV cams. Canon had a few years to study the market before they released the DC10. Did they make any improvements? Read more

We've yet to test a DVD-based camcorder that offers an uncompromising alternative to tape. Canon's DC10 is a decent effort within its field, but cheaper tape-based camcorders still trump it for image quality Read more

It doesn’t have much of a battery-life, which is really hard to locate and when it does freezes, sometimes it tends to wipe out the whole disk. That means all the videos gone just like that, and once it happened in the absolutely wrong timing it was a friend’s wedding and all the footage gone just like that. Read more

I've had a dc10 for years and love it. I got it when my first son was born more then 8 years ago and it is still going strong. I have a stack of mini dvds that this camera has made and most look great. The ones in poor light kind of came out grainy but they were recorded in poor light! I will use this till it dies because I like how easy it is to use. What is really good about it is it records on little dvds for 20 minutes. Read more

Great Camcorder. One problem, tripod mount hole was stripped =(. I decided to buy this camcorder, because my son is very interested in filming his friends skateboarding, and he did all this research to find the perfect/affordable camcorder and found this one. Read more

I think it never allows you to start finalizing if the AC is not switched ON, But disconnecting AC while finalizing is bad news. That`s time and power consuming process and if it runs out of power before completing, bye bye data... I have shot 100+ cheap -R discs, LP mode on most of them, 2 lost data, not a bad percentage overall... Once I dropped it on a wooden floor from about 1.5 meters while walking and shooting. Read more

Bought this in 2006 really for its video features, but have been really delighted with its quality of still images . Its lightweight design and "fit like a glove" handgrip make it very comfortable for longer recordings as well as easy to preview using the easily moved swivel screen. The zoom leaves a little to be desired as it's not so easy to access while recording and makes audible noise on the resulting video, but overall quality of image and sound is excellent for... There are many reasons that you may want to consider the Canon DC 10, as well as a few that could drive you away. First and foremost, the Canon DC 10 is easy to use and operate. So obviously, beginners to shooting videos will find this model to be a perfect choice. But on the downside of things the DC 10 does not offer enough features for advanced videographers to feel comfortable. Additionally, the image quality could stand for a bit of improvement as well. As you can see, the DC 10 is either a hit or miss. Some people will love what it has to offer, while others will pass it by for more advanced options.

Even though DVD players are superior to VHS players in the home, this is not necessarily true in the world of camcorders. Although DVD camcorders such as the DC 10 make it easier to store video, they are not as good as MiniDV models as far as resolution and quality is concerned.

The biggest benefit of the Canon DC 10 is that it can burn videos to DVDs in real time. The DVDs are half sized 80mm discs that load into the side of the unit. The ability to accommodate these half sized discs is the reason that the DC 10 is shaped like it is; and this is a good thing. Holding onto and shooting with the Canon DC 10 is much easier than some models from competing manufacturers.

There is still a long way to go before DVD camcorders catch up in the way of video quality. The DC 10 does an okay job as far as quality and color is concerned, but it is not nearly as good as some of the competition.

For a beginner who is looking for a DVD camcorder the Canon DC 10 is a viable option. Just make sure that you also take a look at what the competition has to offer.
