Summary: The dell Precision Workstation line is different than your standard PC. It is a work station intended for consistent use all day, all night and all year. It is the choice of professionals that want a machine that won't go down. I have two, both are rock solid. You can get by with a P4 or upgrade to a D dual core processor. Mine are fully loaded with max memory and a couple of big drives. I have had both of them for 4 years and never gone down yet.
Summary: This is not the ordinary computer, this is meant for business; however, this is my regular desktop for everyday use. I do use it for virtualization and a few other things. I have it with 2 xeon dual core processors looking to upgrade to the quad cores . I have 4gb ram upgrading to 16gb minimum. Overall great workstation.
Summary: WOW - this machine is 8 years old? Very solid machine - I have upgraded the OS HD to SSD and increased the speed of the unit, and I am suprised that this has become my primary work pc with dual monitors. The Xeon processor does a great job for my purposes.
Computer Damaged By Shipper Replaced With An Upgrade
19 December 2010
Summary: I ordered a Dell Precision 490 from the vendor and waited. I tracked it and was confused by what I saw then I received a call to my voice mail from Everel, a nice fellow working for the vendor to inform me that the computer I had ordered, sustained damage in the hands of the shipper. Because of what happened, Everal told me that since they were out of the 490's, he was shipping me and upgrade to a T3400.
