Excerpt: Alienware has been part of Dell for years now, but keeps designing unique and powerful gaming systems. Take the X51 R2, for example, a very sleek desktop gaming PC that's compact enough for the living room.
Conclusion: The X51 is a beautifully engineered computer that can’t entirely overcome the fundamental challenges all small gaming PCs face. Yes, it’s easy to disassemble; but upgrading is a chore. Yes, it packs incredible hardware in a small profile; but it’s still loud. Yes, it can be used with Steam’s Big Picture Mode; but most PC games still lack controller support. All of these problems are notable, but the system has a savior: price.
Pros: Small, compact chassis, Plenty of connectivity, Components are surprisingly easy to replace, Affordable
Cons: Limited upgradability, Bundled peripherals seem a waste, Loud when gaming
Summary: The Alienware X51 sports a nice and compact chassis with good internal hardware. However, it isn't as stylish and over-the-top as previous Alienware desktops. Cutting down on Alienwares characteristic excesses, the X51 aims to provide gamers a slim and smart gaming alternative.
Pros: Sleek design, form factor, Good hardware, Decent overall performance
Cons: Expensive, Graphics could've been better, Older processor
Conclusion: When rumors of a “Steam Box” hardware spec from Valve kicked up earlier this year, it was suggested that the X51 was designed with that spec in mind. Whether or not those rumors were accurate, it’s easy to see why this new Alienware offering would be connected to them. There is serious gaming power in this relatively tiny box, and the whole thing taken together represents one of the best values out there for high-performance PC gaming.
Pros: Beautifully compact design, Lots of power for the price, USB 3.0 ports and built-in Wi-Fi beat you to the punch on upgrades, Easy access interior, part-swapping
Cons: Minimally flexible for future upgrades, More complex than a standalone console, Hefty power brick will need to be hidden away under some furniture
Conclusion: When some consider the size of a small form factor system, they tend to set their expectations in performance directly proportional to that size, for the most part. To say we were impressed with the numbers this little machine put out would be an understatement. We'll stop just short of "blown-away" but we're a bit jaded around these parts anyway.
