Networking died

Craig B., Newegg
13 September 2006
  • Pros: small
  • Cons: The built in network card burned out within the first 6 months, which is a big problem when you consider only 2 PCI slots. Also, the TV out is especially difficult under linux if you're making a MythTV.

Mike C., Newegg
10 July 2006
  • Summary: All an all and excleent, well built case that will not disappoint.
  • Pros: Very solid little case. Nice extras and a good motherboard.
  • Cons: If laid on side you are unable to open the flap covering the media slots.

small and good

Pawel M., Newegg
17 May 2006
  • Summary: It's loud but you can buy different fan. LOOKOUT: CPU is not in the middle of the heatsink so the heatsink that comes with the barebone has to stay.
  • Pros: It's very small.
  • Cons: There are few Pundit-R350 BIOS versions. Confusing.

User Review

Kyle K., Newegg
27 April 2006
  • Summary: I'm using this as a home FTP to back up all my important data, and also as a server to run my TS server for my guild. Works great! Run cold for its compact size and it runs 24/7.
  • Pros: Very sleek and nice looking, the overall design of the case is great. Eveeything seems to be in order. I bought the refurbished version of this product, and it contained everything I needed. ASUS is a great company and I have had limited problems with them in the past.
  • Cons: The ASUS cpu fan supplied is way to loud. I replaced it with the stock fan from my stock 939 HSF from my other rig. That fan works just as well with a fraction of the noise. Also to get to the CMOS jumper you have to remove the Optical/HDD tray, no biggie.

cheap choice for htpc

Anonymous, Newegg
29 March 2006
  • Summary: I was trying to build a htpc system for as cheap as possible and use old drives to save money. But an old 16x DVD-ROM was barely too long to fit. I also bought a SATA adapter to use an IDE drive (wasnt positive when purchasing it would boot to IDE HD, it will).
  • Pros: Small and nice looking, although the cpu fan is somewhat loud I wouldn't really call it an annoying loud except when posting, so overall its not as bad as some people have made it sound and can be easily fixed. Will show bios screen and all on TV-out. Thought I would have to pull out a monitor fo...
  • Cons: IDE Cables almost totally block power supply fan airflow, Not much room to work in. Would be really nice to put a second HD in but only 1 internal bay for HD and 1 for your optical drive. Slots that hold on faceplate easily damaged. I might need to update drivers cause the tv out seems to change ...

great machine

Michael B., Newegg
27 March 2006
  • Summary: newegg rules!
  • Pros: Very great machine, very small, cool, quiet, and has a load of options....this is not a gamers rig but does everything else you could want it to, i would love to buy a few more..
  • Cons: CPU runs a bit warm in my opinion, im used to my p4 3.0E running at 108-120 degrees F, and in the pundit it runs about 130-150 under heavy load, to be expected i guess no big deal :)

Noisy

Mark C., Newegg
17 March 2006
  • Summary: I've built 6 pundits. The original pundit with a northwood P4 proc runs the fan at a beautifully quiet 1875rpm and the cpu is only 96 degrees. However, Newegg doesn't carry northwood anymore, and the new prescott processors are power hogs and run much hotter.
  • Pros: Very nice form factor, built in card reader, fast. This used to be my favorite system because it was quiet, but this is no longer the case.
  • Cons: NOISY! fan runs at 3515rpm w/intel prescott P4. Worse is that there is not enough hysteresis in the smart fan controller so the rpm is constantly, and annoyingly varying. SATA cable included has 2-L connectors instead of 1-L and 1-straight, making it very difficult to connect

Good for mobile NLE

Phuong P., Newegg
17 March 2006
  • Summary: if other product at this price and has all futures this has and cool and quiet. I wont get this barebone.
  • Pros: the reason I bought this is because it comes with dual minitor output, S-Video, composite TV output + firewire 1394 + optical digital audio out ==>> makes a good choice for none linear video editing. It's not the best but this mall pc got everything i need to do most thing other than general comp...
  • Cons: not everything is perfect and Asus wants their products the same thing! Everything seem perfect except the little cheap CUP fan. It's noisy. I think the best is instead of running 1 fan at very high speed, it's better if runs 2 fans with lower speed which make is quiet and cool. Very noisy and ho...

Just change the cpu fan

Shafiq A., Newegg
4 March 2006
  • Pros: I usually don't write reviews, but after reading some reviews I realise most of the user having problem with the noise. My suggestion is just change the cpu fan the noise will be gone. The size of the fan is 70 x 70 x 15mm. (hard to find).
  • Cons: Asus should replace the fan.
