Motherboard eats RAM - not the OS!

Paul S., Newegg
8 February 2009
  • Summary: This motherboard appropriates a certain amount of RAM, in my case around 1200MB out of the 4GB installed, and it is unusable to the OS, period. It doesn't matter if you are running a 32 or 64 bit OS, the OS can only access 2.88GB of memory.
  • Pros: This is a solid small barebones case. It is easy to work with, quiet, and it is perfect for my customer's needs.
  • Cons: Proprietary motherboard, RAM issues (see other thoughts).

Correcting Previous User Statement

Matthew R., Newegg
6 January 2009
  • Pros: I have not bought this unit, I'm writing to correct a review about the 'appropriated' 1 GB of memory lost. The fact of the matter is that with any 32 bit OS, Memory visible to the OS (windows for example) will never be higher than 3GB. This is due to the fact that the address space can't go any h...
  • Cons: So, if you plop 4 GB of memory into ANY 32 Bit Operating System, the BIOS will read 4GB but the OS will only show 3GB. This is NOT a fault with this system. The only way ANY OS can use 4 GB or more is if the OS is a 64 Bit OS (WinXP 64 or WinVista 64). However, many drivers are not written for th...

945 chip eats memory

Anonymous, Newegg
17 November 2008
  • Summary: using it with VGA for now, haven't tried DVI connection The memory issue is serious no doubt, but price and everything else are good
  • Pros: The box is very quiet indeed, pretty much like a laptop, the only sound you'll hear is the hard drive. Design is sleek, portable enough, although not really "booksize" as they advertise. Works well with Linux, I put 64bit openSUSE 11 (also have a clone of WinXP on another partition, no problems w...
  • Cons: The biggest problem is this: it "appropriates" 1G of memory, so be so kind as to subtract 1G from whatever memory amount you have ! From what I've read this is a problem with the intel 945 chip, or the asus board, or both, and can't be fixed. I've checked the bios of course, upgraded it, tried to...

Intel GMA950, no thanks!

Roger S., Newegg
29 September 2008
  • Pros: Seems to run much cooler than the AM2 socket P1-AH2 that we replaced with this model. Includes more usb, places the spdif out on the back (what were you thinking putting optical audio out on the front acus?) and overall, is a very slick machine. Included heatsink is much nicer than stock Intel (i...
  • Cons: Bring back the GeForce 6150! The included GMA 950 cannot do dual monitors! What's the point of having two video outs and not giving any way to run more than one screen? Sure, cloning is alright, but come on.
