Apple Mac Pro (8-Core)

PC Magazine
25 March 2009
  • Conclusion: The Apple Mac Pro (8-Core) is the performance dream PC of the creative professional. If you get one, just make sure you have programs that will take advantage of the extra power.
  • Pros: Easy expansion. Eight-core power. High-end graphics. Looks like the old Mac Pros, so co-workers won't get jealous.
  • Cons: Performance boost isn't as impressive on day-to-day tasks as you'd think. Big and bulky. Windows performance outpaces Mac OS X performance on the same task. Only 90 days of phone tech support.

  • Excerpt: Apple is a late entrant into the 8-core workstation market -- we reviewed the first model with two quad-core Xeons back in November -- but its new Mac Pro will be of great interest to pro creative working on high-end 3D and video projects.
  • Pros: Faster than other 8-core systems. Low price. Well-designed case.
  • Cons: Lack of pro-level 3D card options.
