Conclusion: The iconic iMac now adds a next-gen Intel Penryn processor to its mix. It's faster, more powerful, and still the one to beat.
Pros: Outperforms some quad-core Windows systems. Windows- and Mac-compatible. Fully HD-capable screen. Recyclable aluminum-and-glass construction. Energy Star 4.0-certified. Minimal cables. A speedy 2GB of RAM is standard. No bloatware.
Cons: No media card slots. Mighty Mouse. Other systems are starting to catch up in design. No Blu-ray.
Summary: We liked the first iMacs we saw, and very little has changed with the 24" model so we like it as well. It remains one of the quietest off-the-shelf systems it is possible to buy and, with a built-in 24" screen, it offers fairly good value-for-money. A similarly configured Dell system that we looked at was only about US$200 cheaper, and it lacked the integration and style that are Apple's hallmarks.
Summary: Apple made a number of changes to the 24-inch iMac, but making it available at this price is the most impressive. The rest of the updates are welcome, and Apple's multitasking capability remains unmatched. Provided you like your all-in-ones best as straightforward desktop computers, the iMac will meet your expectations with speed and elegance.
Pros: One of, if not the, most affordable 24-inch all-in-one PCs, Twice as much hard-drive space as older models, Fast Nvidia graphics chip makes the iMac a capable gaming system, Best-in-class multitasking performance, iLife digital media suite comes standard
Cons: Fewer interesting hardware features compared with recent Windows-based all-in-ones
Conclusion: Apple's service and support policies remain one of its disadvantages, however. The one-year parts and labour policy fits in line with the rest of the industry. The 90-day phone support limit, as always, is subpar. At least Apple's online support site is far ranging and comprehensive, and the active user forums may very well be able to solve any of your problems.
Pros: Fewer interesting hardware features compared with recent Windows-based all-in-ones
Cons: One of, if not the, most affordable 24-inch all-in-one PCs, Twice as much hard-drive space as older models, Fast Nvidia graphics chip makes the iMac a capable gaming system, Best-in-class multitasking performance, iLife digital media suite comes standard
