Summary: Normally I would not have purchased a baseline computer, but my computer died unexpectedly and needed to get next-day delivery from Amazon. This computer is fine for most users out there, but if I had to do my purchase over again, I definitely would've upgraded the RAM and storage. 8GB is barely enough run some of my applications simultaneously. Unfortunately, the RAM on the 21" model is soldered to the logic board and cannot be upgraded.
Summary: I got the 21.5 inch iMac from elsewhere with the Fusion Drive option. It has a 1 TB hard drive but the first 128 GB are solid state memory with no moving parts. It is unbelievably fast and there is no noise. Do some research, read the reviews, and don't buy an iMac without the Fusion Drive.
Summary: I'm a loyal Appler, but Apple did some things on this computer that really irked me. The keyboard didn't have the side panel of numbers on it; so had to go back around and buy a different keyboard. Then there was no CDrom slot, so had to buy an external CDRom. Used to be, your iMac came with basic word processing software & Quicken, but no more. Have to buy that aftermarket. Really felt like for the price you pay Apple has gotten a bit greedy.
Summary: I ordered a i5 imac 21.5 with a 2T HD in Sept 2010 from Apple. It had a yellow tinge on bottom 1/3 of screen. Apple customer care was gracious enough arrange a replacement. The first replacement came late Sept with the bottom half yellow tinged. After the 2nd replacement in early October 2010 with the worst yellow tinge (bottom 3/4 to 7/8) AND a clattering drive noise on wake up and boot up time, I sent the unit back for a refund.
Summary: ... but there are niggles. I'm finding that OSX is not intuitive, after years of using Microsoft, and I'm struggling to work out how to use the various utility apps, despite the so-called "help" function. However, it works pretty well and quickly, generally - BUT I have had one catastrophic failure when the thing started refusing to boot - I had to completely reset it, and it took a whole day to do - and that was after I'd spent half an hour trying to work out how to do...
Summary: A possible great product loses 2 stars from me. The first because I've spent the past 2 weeks looking for a non-existent pound sign rather than $ on the keyboard. I thought I was shopping on the Amazon UK site for heavens sake ! The second star is docked because the Apple software won't allow me to manually sync my fully updated iPad . Ok, I can sync through iCloud but that only accounts for iTunes purchases.
Summary: I have to admit it is very good computer but design no, you have to be very careful not to put a SD Card into the DVD drive as I have found to my cost, you have to turn the bloody thing round every time you put a USB cable in and as I am disabled this is very irritating.
Summary: I recently purchased an iMac and have been pleased with except for one major problem, after several minutes of inactivity my iMac drops the wifi signal. I thought maybe it was a problem with my settings so i contacted Apple support and although they tried a few things were unable to resolve the issue. The operator suggested the problem was with my IP/router yet all my other computers, playstation, ipod etc don't have this problem.
Summary: Pros:- Unbelievable! I have been a computer engineer since before the PC was born, and personally put together some remarkably powerfull boxes, huge memories, solid state drives and all that. This is just pure quality, and a pleasure to use. I had to transfer data from a Sony all-in-one purchased 16th Jan. They are just not in the same league in any way, and found it very satisfying when I switched the Sony off, leaving the iMac running, perfect silence.
Summary: I bought my 24" Imac 4 years ago for music editing using Logic. For this and for Garageband it is brilliant, or would be except for an intermittent mains hum. People keep telling me this is a mains loop but the problem persisted when I moved house, changed mixing desks, and moved to a usb audio module. Swapping leads around can cure it temporarily.
