Misleading code

naibaf, Amazon
1 October 2009
  • Summary: I was expecting that it was in the original intel cpu box with heatsink for that price, given the code use A stands for active cooling.

Good bang for your buck

Anonymous, Newegg
24 July 2009
  • Summary: Good piece of equipment for test rendering to final renders.
  • Pros: This piece of hardware is very powerful for it's price, preventing the need to over pay for a newer processor that has a small amount faster processing speed. It's being used for 3d rendering mostly and no issues have arisen.
  • Cons: none

Good Processor

Andrew C., Newegg
15 June 2009
  • Summary: It is a good processor for the price without getting into the extreme series, which will not give you much of any perceivable performance increase (but will cost double if not more).
  • Pros: Fast processor for the price. Reliable and good for 64 bit OS.
  • Cons: None.

Very Fast 2-way Processor

Qiushi M., Newegg
25 February 2009
  • Summary: Got a pair of these on online auction site for under a grand on Feb 2008 a couple months after they came out. Not sure if they fell off a truck or if they were defective (see MCE comment above.
  • Pros: Put 2 of these on a Tyan server board with 8 GB of FB-DIMMs. Installed Gentoo and used it as a colocated server. Gentoo compile times are simply flying with make -j9. Longest run time 233 days without a reboot.
  • Cons: Occasional machine check exceptions when I am running Folding@Home on all 8 cores, which causes kernel panic. Other than that, haven't seen any errors with the processor.

Love my Xeon

George I., Newegg
14 July 2008
  • Pros: Love these Processor I have two of these puppies... and it cuts down on my rendering times so much.. and also alows me to run a couple programs at once.. which really helps when I'm using my 3D software
  • Cons: Very few 3rd party heatsinks out there for the socket 771

Awesome processor

Chris O., Newegg
23 February 2008
  • Pros: This processor is extremely fast. I'm a professional 3d artist and network admin working in a studio with a 200 node render farm made up of E6600's, Q6600's, E6700's, and E6850's and on a per core basis the E5440 is faster then all of them. It processes 4.5 times the data of the E6850
  • Cons: The only thing is that the cpu fans make alot of noise. And there are very few 3rd party heatsinks out there for the socket 771

Very Fast Quad

Ross W., Newegg
3 February 2008
  • Summary: I wish CS3, Studio 11, Lightroom, and all the other programs out there would use all eight of the threads at once. Some people think that just because you see activity on all the cores means it uses them all (wrong) it just means the OS is doing its job on distributing the threads to all.
  • Pros: I bought one of these at Christmas 07 and loved it so much I bought a second just before February 08. Most Apps for XP don't allocate all 8 threads so Speed on a lot of my apps stayed the same, I can just run more apps while I'm making my HD 1080p/i videos.
  • Cons: None, I think they are well priced for the performance ratio. I remember not that long ago you would pay this much for a single core Xeon so I'm not going to complain too much about the pricing strategies of Intel.
