Worthwhile upgrade if you are in the market

ET "Taylor Walker", Amazon
  • Summary: It's a pretty good CPU for the $. There isn't as much bang for the buck as in previous cycles (in fact, SSDs have been the most efficient upgrade route for some time now), but going from an i3 to an i7 is worth it in this specific case.

Such... Speed...

Simon M., Newegg
12 July 2014
  • Summary: Intel rules!
  • Pros: This processor is amazingly good, and it's not even the real thing (K). I would not have minded paying the extra 30$ for the K one, but I never overclock my gear so I don't really need it. The S version is still a BOMB. I have absolutely no regret about buying this over a 4th gen i5.
  • Cons: None... yet.

Like it

Christian B., Newegg
5 February 2014
  • Summary: -Well integrated for my silent computer (ssd, fanless power supply, noctua case fans) -Replaced stock heatsink/fan with Cooler Master 212 EVO because I wanted a slient computer. Set fan to silent mode in BIOS and surprised how the fan is almost always completely stopped and cpu is running around 32...
  • Pros: Very fast, only 65 watts, impressed how runs suprisingly cool! I usually overclock but this cpu is fast enough so it's set to run stock.
  • Cons: Cheap and loud stock intel fan, even when set to silent mode in BIOS. But easily solved by changing to Cooler Master 212 EVO, so not really a con.

Balanced high performance and heat

Chebar C., Newegg
17 December 2013
  • Summary: Using this for a Linux-based multipurpose HTPC + light gaming + VM and remote desktop server. Watercooled for a totally silent system. Excellent performance.
  • Pros: This is the lowest-heat Haswell i7 available, still achieving excellent performance. Not overclocking, just want high power and multitasking.
  • Cons: Expensive option, while not the absolute fastest available.

Great, fast, low-ish power.

Kendrick Vargas, Amazon
6 November 2013
  • Summary: Very fast CPU, love that it's low power. Since I need more words, I'd like to point out that the fit into the socket was perfect, so points for manufacturing tolerances to high standards :-)

True Workhorse

E.Langdon, Amazon
2 October 2013
  • Summary: Been rock solid since I fired it up, noticeable speedup for single thread programs. Energy usage is amazing - total build uses 100W less that the previous. Passed my burn in test with flying colors (x264 10bit encode of 1080p content over the course of 5hrs) Full tilt - runs hot, but no hiccups with...
