Even better, the higher-binned Core i7 processors, the 940 and 965XE, are overclocking exceedingly high, as well. While the Core i7 920 is definitely the value leader, throwing a few hundred dollars here or there might allow you to push past 4.0 GHz a little easier compared to the 920, although we doubt you'll get that much more to justify the price tag increase. While the performance of the Core i7 920 at stock speeds is very remarkable, it really shines when it comes to overclocking.  I was able to clock this processor  up over 1.5GHz above it stock rated speed and keep the system stable - that's a 57% overclock!  At these speeds there is nothing from the other camp that can come close to the performance of this "budget" processor.  It's amazing to see the low-end CPU from Intel kick the top-end AMD chip around the block.  Read more

After the disaster that was the Pentium 4, Intel have learned some valuable lessons that they show little sign of forgetting at present, forging ahead with improving both manufacturing process technologies at one point in time, and then their actual architecture at the next, bringing us as consumers a constant pattern of performance improvements and innovations that constantly ramp up the pressure on Intel's natural rivals, AMD. Intel has been on a performance-winning-streak ever since it unleashed its ‘Core’ line of processors on the market. Not content with waiting around for AMD to counterattack, Intel continued to update its Core processors to boost performance and this trend has continued to this day. This time around however, the update is far more significant with the launch of the Core i7 family of processors, which are based on the ‘Nehalem’ micro-architecture. Read more

    • For: Cool running, triple channel memory support, excellent application and gaming performance, very overclockable on standard voltage.
    • Against: You’ll need a new motherboard to use these chips.

In a few weeks you can find a brand new Intel CPU at your local hardware shop, it still carries the Core name but it is drastically different compared to their previous Core 2 units. The Core i7 has an onboard memory controller and hyperthreading is re-introduced. We compare the performance of the entry level 920 model as well as the high end 965 XE. Read more

Conclusions So we get back to my original question: “Is the i7 all hype?” Looking at the physical architectural differences between the i7 and the Core 2 series, Intel has made some significant changes in their new processor line. The Nehalem is not just a warmed-over Core 2 Quad, there are enough changes in the architecture and processes in the new processor that I consider it very loosely based on the earlier CPU line. I have to say well done to Intel for producing one of the best processors I've tested in recent years. Although it does require a new motherboard with LGA socket-1366 and Tri-Channel memory ... the new Core i7 series of processors and the accompanying X58 chipset will be the standard to beat for the forthcoming year in 2009. Intel Core i7 Processor I-7 920 is one great option for serious and demanding users. Though not the most extreme of the CPUs available, it offers good overclocking capability. Professional audio and video appplications would be happy to be powered by this processor. Included heat sink if efficient. The fan installed on top is good quality and runs quiet. Highly recommended. You would need to spend a lot of extra bucks to get a little more performance. Read more

The CORE i7 is a processor by Intel. It has a frequency of 2.66GHz but can be massively overclocked. It is a quad-core, but due to hyper-threading, it shows up as eight-cores from system diagnostics. Speed The i7 is extraordinarily fast, and it can be made even faster with some modifications in the overclocking department. From the defaulted settings that it comes shipped on, benchmarks show that it beats it’s AMD Competitor, the Phenom II X4, by a fair amount. Read more
