Blinding Speed

Chris M, Amazon
13 July 2013
  • Summary: This was the heart of the liquid cooled system that I helped my son build. Fastest processor known to man at the time we built this monster of a PC. Everything else is standing still next to this!! GREAT Product.

Computer Gaming CPU

Cowboybob "CB", Amazon
6 March 2013
  • Summary: This first generation i7 is unbelievable! It is faster than my previous i7 920 and 960, which were both excellent processors. The 6 cores with 12 threads runs at about 1% when typing or other chores. when gaming it only used between 8 and 14% of the CPU with periodic burst to 32%. WOW. I have a friend with a 2nd generation and this 980 is very competitive. I recommend it to anyone out there.

Can't find a way to use it all!

Seth Andrew Martin, Amazon
14 April 2012
  • Summary: Try as I might, SETI@Home is the only thing I can get to fully utilize all 12 cores, which is awesome. Tragically, it won't work as a space heater either because it doesn't get hot enough.

Overclocks slightly better than 45nm

eXperiment4l "eXperiment4l", Amazon
11 March 2012
  • Summary: This processor is the non-extreme version, I told Amazon about the incorrect image a month ago and they said they would change it the next business day... The 3930K is a 6 core Sandy Bridge E that has much more power than this one for just a little more $ however you'll have to upgrade your motherboard for $300+ for the 2011 socket, and then for me change the waterblock mount fittings, and buy another stick of ram for quad channel etc...

Cheaper than an X

Michael Adams, Amazon
11 March 2012
  • Summary: Couldn't afford the Extreme so I went with this. I overclocked it to 4.2 Ghz on H20 without moving the core voltage at all. Probably could go higher but the temps are <35 degrees on full load and I like rock-solid stable and cool. x58 has very little to offer over the newer chips but I had expensive hardware built around the platform already. Wasn't ready for a full reset quite yet. This chip has given my rig a couple more years of life.
