Summary: This was the heart of the liquid cooled system that I helped my son build. Fastest processor known to man at the time we built this monster of a PC. Everything else is standing still next to this!! GREAT Product.
Summary: This first generation i7 is unbelievable! It is faster than my previous i7 920 and 960, which were both excellent processors. The 6 cores with 12 threads runs at about 1% when typing or other chores. when gaming it only used between 8 and 14% of the CPU with periodic burst to 32%. WOW. I have a friend with a 2nd generation and this 980 is very competitive. I recommend it to anyone out there.
Summary: Couldn't afford the Extreme so I went with this. I overclocked it to 4.2 Ghz on H20 without moving the core voltage at all. Probably could go higher but the temps are <35 degrees on full load and I like rock-solid stable and cool. x58 has very little to offer over the newer chips but I had expensive hardware built around the platform already. Wasn't ready for a full reset quite yet. This chip has given my rig a couple more years of life.
Summary: *I don't encourage you to overclock and am not responsible for your results if you do overclock. This is the sixth i7-based system I have built. The first i7 920 built 2 and a half years ago acheived stunning performance. When Intel came out with these new 6-core 32 nm processors I was curious about their overclocking potential considering it is an older architecture that has been moved to a smaller manufacturing process. My curiosity was rewarded with this purchase.
