Summary: About the highest I could go to upgrade an old Dell. Couldn't do quad but don't care since for what I do didn't need the extra cores. That said I'm extremely happy with it - popped it in and all of a sudden a new machine! Nice to know also it runs cool.
Excerpt: Intel and AMD are constantly competing to release the best processor hardware at the most affordable prices. Intel’s Core 2 Duo chipset was one of its better moves and allowed it to dominate AMD around 2005 to 2006.
Summary: This CPU certainly will work for 75% of the non-gaming population. My Windows 7 build is 8GB RAM, SSD for C: (which has OS), mirrored Western Digital E: drive for non-OS stuff, and the video card (of all things) is the bottle-neck according to the idiotic Microsoft benchmark. I don't "do" games, so I don't care about video performance. The CPU handles all the browsing, Visual Studio 2010+ and DVD ripping that I throw at it.
