Defective cores

Timothy N., Newegg
27 October 2011
  • Summary: I would personally choose another CPU than this.
  • Pros: Cheap
  • Cons: Had this CPU for about 2 years now. Very shortly after owning it I started having blue screens. Had to crank the voltage up to 1.30 and turn the clock down to 2.2ghz for it to run stable. Turns out #3 core is defective, and is common.

NO 64 bit support

Charles T., Newegg
8 August 2009
  • Summary: May it depends on the batch of 9600 you get sure it runs a mean 32 bit. And i can do what ever i want in 32 bit. From now on i'll take these reviews a little more serouscly. But hey its great price for the performance ratio if your going to use it for 32 bit.
  • Pros: It runs 32 bit great. AND my now 6 gigs of ram is worthless
  • Cons: i thought this could run a 64 bit os with the TLB fix enable with vista service pack. Nope BSD with in a half an hour if i do any thing besides browse the internet. Launch steam BSD, Launch note pad BSD, Launch firefox BSD, launch IE no BSD, W.T..F.

hmm

Jay B., Newegg
29 July 2009
  • Summary: If you ran a company would you sell an inferior product with known issues?
  • Pros: it's a quad core
  • Cons: it's a quad core limited to whatever the windows patch will let it run. If you get the TLB removal tool you can OC it to a nice speed but it wont be long until it blue screens on you.

AMD 9600

David S., Newegg
21 July 2009
  • Summary: For building an inexpensive system (under $400 total) this was a good choice. This isn't my main gaming system but a storage/VM server.
  • Pros: Nice fast Chip. Running Vista x64 without any issues (8GB RAM). Using this as my virtualization server - running 5 VMs along with core OS.
  • Cons: There are faster chips out there - but this works for what I wanted it for.

Underwhelming

Adam K., Newegg
4 July 2009
  • Pros: Quad-core, low price, stable at standard clock
  • Cons: Awful overclocker. Could hardly squeeze 200Mhz out of it. For the money you can find chips that OC much better.

Descent CPU

Alfonso A., Newegg
24 June 2009
  • Pros: CPU is good for average tasks, Quad cores are good for transcoding and is all around a good CPU to hold the " Quad Core" title. No eratum issue here!!!
  • Cons: Why make a black edition with unlocked multipliers if it can't go more than 2.5 GHz with out it hanging.

  • Summary: Thermaltake Tsunami (2) 120mm Fans) Corsair 750W PS Phenom 9600 2.3 Thermaltake Big Typ 14 AsRock K10N780SLIX3 (8) Gigs G.SKill DDR2 1066 EVGA GTX 260 (216) Superclocked
  • Pros: Cheap quadcore cpu
  • Cons: 2.3 GHz dont waste your time with this processor. I wish i did more looking into this i would have went with Phenom 2 720 2.8 triplecore...way better. Quadcore is a waste of money, i use my comp for gaming the only games ive seen 2 cores being used nothing more. Spend the extra money on a faster ...

Bios settings

Robert F., Newegg
15 June 2009
  • Summary: It is paired with an ASUS M3A78-EM MB. The default setting for the CPU is unstable, when set to 2000 it is good. I need the manual setting for this CPU. Auto doesn't work. I don't know what they should be except for the CPU frequency.
  • Pros: It does well with XP and Windows 7 in dual boot setting. I enjoy Photoshop CS 4 in Windows 7 64.
  • Cons: I had to underclock it to 2000 to get a stable system in Windows 7.

Not bad for the price

Anonymous, Newegg
10 June 2009
  • Summary: If you get a stable one you will like it, but if not you will have to deal with warranty.
  • Pros: Fast. It does what it is suppose to and it does a good job at it.
  • Cons: Out of the several that I have gotten over the years, I would say there is about a 50% failure rate. I have built twelve PC's in the last year with this chip. 6 of them stopped posting just over three month's of use. I had no problems with AMD's warranty. But out of the 6 returned to warranty, 3 ...
