Conclusion: We can appreciate AMD’s stance with regard to single-core versus dual. There are clear advantages to running a dual-core chip in the right environment, but without full clock speed parity, the perception is that a single-core Athlon 64 FX will be faster in non-threaded software. To an extent, that’s true. Half-Life 2 favors the FX, even at 1600x1200. But the difference is relatively small compared to an X2 4800+, especially when you consider the X2’s other strengths.
Conclusion: Although the AMD Athlon 64 FX-57 is fast, there are still certain areas that could be further improved. While AMD's Athlon 64 core is known to be fantastic at integer performance, it still fell prey to certain applications that depend a lot on the processor's floating-point performance.
