Sturdy Industrial Strength Enterprise Grade Server Box. Pricey but heavy duty

Joseph S., Newegg
1 January 2016
  • Summary: Don't buy this if you're wanting something easily moved or portable - it's heavy! It's quiet enough to have in your office if your config (which should be most typical installs) allows the fans to run slower. However if you want silence, this rig is really meant for a server room so think twice.
  • Pros: - The side panel mechanism is nice - pops open with a push on the tab, and swings open almost like a hinge giving full access effortlessly. By just taking two screws out you can pop down the Fan partition down about 30 degrees (and pop the fans out with one hand) for room to connect backplane cab...
  • Cons: Minor: the cable from MB USB header to the front panel is just short enough that if you pull the 5.25 drive rack all the way out it can pull the header loose at that end. Annoying since there's not enough room to put it back in place if there's a device in the upper slot. And of course it's a pri...

Most Excellent File Server Case

Jason V., Newegg
20 February 2015
  • Summary: This is a server case, not one you want to use for your gaming rig. Its power supply is perfectly sized to handle a CPU (or two) and 8 drives. Don't think you're going to drive 2 big nVidia or AMD graphics cards with it because it's not adequate for that.
  • Pros: Hot-swap SATA, PWM cooling fans, clear plastic cover for motherboard to help create "wind tunnel" from disk fans to rear of case, perfectly-sized power supply to drive CPU and 8 HDD
  • Cons: PWM fan cables need to be longer. Had to purchase splitters so that I could connect the 4 fans up to the 2 closest PWM headers on the SuperMicro motherboard. 4-pin extenders would also work at the cost of using up all of the mobo's headers. SuperMicro should also include the rear fan by default g...

nice option if you need a tower

Accounts P., Newegg
19 September 2014
  • Summary: This is the best option I've found anywhere when you need a server chassis in a tower configuration. It can also be rack-mounted, so it's nice to know that's an option in the future.
  • Pros: This case is basically a standard server 4U tipped on its side. It has the normal features you'd expect in a server chassis: they're not shown in the current pictures of this exact model, but the other CSE-743 chassis sold here have pictures showing the internals, which are the same. It has multi...
  • Cons: The cables for the case fans are relatively short, and you will need extensions depending on your motherboard. You will also need 4 PWM fan connectors on your MB: there probably won't be that many on a typical consumer motherboard, so verify the number and location in advance. The fans are extrem...
