no wii support, poor startup

Jasper W., Newegg
12 April 2013
  • Summary: i recently modded a friends wii and was going to give him this as a temporary setup until he could afford an external HDD along with a spare drive i had lying around. unfortunately no matter what kind of fiddling i did i could not get this to work on the wii.
  • Pros: it has been working for over 6 years now.
  • Cons: i have had issues with connecting this system to pretty much anything i have used it for. for computers you need to turn the power supply on first and then once the HDD has fully spun up you can connect the USB cable. if you do it in the wrong order the computer doesnt always register the new dev...

IDE & SATA Adapter

William R., Newegg
24 February 2008
  • Summary: Instructions should cover more about the operation of the device, power button.
  • Pros: Bought unit on a shim to recover data on a drive that I would be removing. May have over heated. Bought this for the SATA connection/USB hookup so I did not have to leave it in the case. From beginning to end it took be 3 minutes to set up and actually find that power button. After that I was abe...
  • Cons: The SATA connection is VERY temporary so I guess this is ok but you have to be careful, something to keep it secure to the drive would be a comfort. I have to place it in a cool place out of the way of being bumped.

Works but chincy

Jeff B., Newegg
22 January 2008
  • Summary: I wish I would have bought another one; I'll use this one until it wears out. It should have a connector for 2.5" (laptop/notebook) drives.
  • Pros: It works.
  • Cons: I don't understand why others are blowing their drives; it's not hard to make sure you're plugging the molex connector in properly. Yet, it's very hard to push in the AC adapter into the molex power input on the device. It's really light-weight and gives the impression that it's chincy. Again, it...

Nice design except for Molex socket

NICHOLAS R., Newegg
18 January 2008
  • Summary: Molex socket is keyed but pins are not sufficiently recessed to make a difference. I fried both the power supply and an attached SATA drive by inserting it upside down.
  • Pros: "long side" of adapter is SATA rather than PATA; requires few cables; is compact.
  • Cons: Very light, easy to accidentally disconnect. Power switch is on cord and does not indicate position; power LED on device only indicates USB connection.

good but be careful

Anonymous, Newegg
15 January 2008
  • Summary: a warning: the 5/12v power plug can be inserted the wrong way in the unit. that just cost me a harddrive accompanied by both smoke and smell. but the unit still works (I wish it had been opposite).
  • Pros: no serious complaints. I'd buy again. just discovered that also booting Fedora with it works (allthough the swap partition was skipped)
  • Cons: no power on/off indication (the height difference of the power button in depressed and released state is hardly moticeable).

superb build quality

EUI J., Newegg
13 January 2008
  • Summary: need to be careful with PATA alignment when plugging in, so dont let anyone else use it or you might end up with broken pins on your 1TB drives!
  • Pros: few things the scythe does that my other brand (starts with V) does not. 1. actually does its job without breaking every single drive it touches. 2. allows connecting two devices at once with the included molex splitter. 3. has simple two-piece design, not four. 4. actually has a proper grip on t...
  • Cons: make me feel like a hopeless loser for trying the other brand first.

User Review

Michael E., Newegg
9 December 2007
  • Summary: Well worth the money. I easily went through all my old drives to get what I needed and determine which drives could be thrown. Have yet to try the sata.
  • Pros: Extremely easy to hook drives up.
  • Cons: Difficult to determine if power button on power cord is on or off.

corrupted drives

Chris F., Newegg
30 November 2007
  • Summary: purchased this to transfer data of a couple of old machines (win95 & win98). Had to finally junk the machines, but before I did, made sure they booted up, so I know that the disks at least worked.
  • Pros: small, compact, easy to follow instructions.
  • Cons: is not reliable. slow and corrupts data on FAT32 drives.

  • Pros: Product works great, no problems. I tried several other brands before finding this one that actually works like it is supposed to.

Fried 2 SATA drives

Gregory S., Newegg
6 August 2007
  • Summary: I can't risk using this anymore. It's in the trash.
  • Pros: Successfully used with laptop and desktop internal IDE/ATA drives.
  • Cons: Fried two Western Digital WD4000KB 400GB SATA internal drives. Applied power through the legacy power on the adapter through to the SATA power just as instructed. After both drives failed to spin up, checked drive circuit boards and found blackened components on the drive circuit board. Drives we...
