Poorly Designed Dock

Adrian C., Newegg
9 May 2013
  • Summary: Would rather use the Gigabyte MB's included bracket and cables as they have no external power - just a 5 watt internal and lay the hard drive on the desktop.
  • Pros: All I can say is "It worked"
  • Cons: Very poorly designed. The on-off button is on the rear of the dock. To turn it off requires the dock unit to be turned to see the little on/off switch. Doing so may disconnect the power cord. Also has a short connection to the power brick (2 feet max), then an extension wire to connect to the ele...

So Far So Good

Anonymous, Newegg
7 December 2012
  • Pros: 1. Works well with SATA HDD up to 2TB. 2. Transfer speeds are good.
  • Cons: 1. Unit I received is not the one pictured on the Masscool box but is the one that appears on the Newegg website. 2. Newegg needs to remove the description on the website that says this item can read "any size drive". It only reads up to 2TB and Masscool's website reflects this. 3. Backup functio...

Buyer Beware

Corey A., Newegg
21 October 2012
  • Summary: Try something else..
  • Pros: It worked for about a month and I was able to complete some transfers. Maybe you'll get lucky like some of the other reviewers.
  • Cons: It just randomly stopped working one day.. Can hear disk spinning up but Windows no longer recognizes drive when plugged USB or E-SATA. / You could be unlucky like me and some of the others..

SATA II data rate only 37 MBps / Mac OSX

William R., Newegg
20 August 2012
  • Summary: My SATA card supports 150 MBps on other SATA II drives, but I only get 37 with this Masscool product. I recently wrote Masscool technical support and they told me to use the included CD to install a driver. I wrote back and said it does contain an OS-X driver.
  • Pros: Reads drives in either SATA II or USB2
  • Cons: ... but both speeds are slower than specifications, or what I get via USB2 or SATA II with other external drives. The SATA II throughput is only 37 MBps! That's slower even than Firewire 400 or USB2! The product USB2 speeds are around 17.

Does not support drives over 2TB

Jamie T., Newegg
13 August 2012
  • Pros: Works fine for me with a 2TB drive over the USB interface.
  • Cons: Does not recognize drives over 2TB. The features listed claim "any size drive", but masscool's website as since been updated to say up to 2TB.

Works fine on USB 2.0 but not always on eSATA pass-through

Tom G., Newegg
23 March 2012
  • Pros: Pretty much plug and play with Windows XP & 7. No problems on USB 2.0 or 1.1. Works with all three spare hard drives.
  • Cons: The eSATA interface on the rear doesn't always work. Could be the mainboard or BIOS but who knows?

not sata 2

Anonymous, Newegg
24 January 2012
  • Summary: I am in the market for better docking station. this time i will look for a sata 3 internal interface or some positive reviews on ssd transfer speed. Also i will get a dock with both esata and usb 3 not usb 2
  • Pros: Its been working for quite a while now. If you use a regular hard drive it might not make a huge difference in your transfer speeds that it seems to only work at sata 1 speed.
  • Cons: however if you have a very fast hard drive or ssd it makes a difference. Getting tired of these sata 1 speeds. Does not matter what esata device i hook it up to. I have tried esata 3 pci-e cards sata 3 motherboards sata 2 motherboards all through a sata to esata bracket or directly in the case of...

Power supply failed

Bart L., Newegg
30 October 2011
  • Pros: Durable, easy to connect, and stable platform.
  • Cons: I used mine many times in different places and changing out HDs and unplugging the system fairly often. The power supply went dead for it after about 4 months.

Works via eSata

Mark P., Newegg
23 September 2011
  • Summary: I have been using this to backup laptop drives to a disk in my desktop via Macrium Reflect for a couple of years. It is a fast way to make a true backup of a disk and even create a clone so you can have one on hand when traveling. Just bought one for another computer. Does what it is supposed to.
  • Pros: Works
  • Cons: None

Ion P., Newegg
14 September 2011
  • Summary: Non working eSATA,Masscool said they are not responsible for warranty passed the one year(I just had a week over the term). Not the best way to do business,IMHO.
  • Pros: Looks, no issues on USB connection whatsoever.
  • Cons: eSATA non functional.
