Do not purchase this product unless you like the taste and smell of plastic.

Summary: I don't understand the high reviews for this item. Coffee doesn't get hot enough to brew properly and after trying to flush unit with many water cycles it didn't phase the prominent plastic odor and taste. Also if plastic odor and taste are this bad think of all the carcinogens that are going into your body.
Summary: I bought the EC-DAC50 on October 31, 2011 so I have had lots of experience with this coffee maker. First, it makes outstanding coffee and has many great features, like the handy removable reservoir, the filter and the general form factor and design. However, the carafe is paper thin and is absolutely guaranteed to crack around the metal band. Guaranteed! No matter how delicately you handle it or how much you avoid thermal shock, it will break.
Summary: I purchased this coffee maker less than 2years ago. I immediately wrote the company and said there was an issue with the heating plate being too hot and scorching the coffee after a few minutes. They replied that I must be confusing scorched coffee with coffee that was too strong and that I should use less coffee grounds. I have always turned the coffee maker off immediately after the coffee is brewed and rewarm any 2nd cup in the microwave.
Summary: I really wanted to like this coffee maker. Basic, simple, easy to use design. Unfortunately, the water coming out peaks at around 165 degrees fahrenheit. Several other reviews have pointed this out as well, leading me to believe it is a design flaw rather than a problem with an individual unit. I measured the temperature of the water coming out of the brew spout with a digital thermometer.
Summary: After a few weeks use of the Zojirushi EC-DAC50 coffee maker I realized that my my morning eagerness to brew and drink coffee had seriously deteriorated. Using more ground coffee didn't help. This led to my checking the temperature. I filled the reservoir and, without coffee or filter, I measured the temperature of the hot water in the container when the flow of hot water stopped.
Summary: The coffee this unit makes is uniformly weak. I measured the water temperature above the filter and found it topped out at 176 degrees Fahrenheit, and that only at the end of the brew cycle. This is about 20 degrees lower than it should be for good coffee. Save your money.
Poor performance after a few months. Very dissappointing

Summary: Have changed my review. Liked it initially and gave it 4 stars--not 5 because there was no automatic shutoff--a safety concern. It worked fine for about 5 months. Then just started to make weaker and weaker coffee as though it wasn't heating the water enough. I would have had to pay shipping both ways and wasn't sure if it was worth it, so I decided to dump the thing.
