Summary: I purchased this at a promotion discount from Illy. For espresso fans this is going to disappoint but it does produce an easy, satisfactory coffee (overpriced when you figure the cost per capsule). For anyone considering this there are many more affordable capsule options that produce equally pleasing coffee. The capsules quickly lose their freshness once a tin is opened and the taste is bland.
For what it is, and what it cost, it works just fine!

Summary: I bought the X8 machine on promotion directly from Illy in 2009. It's outlived the Breville XL 900. Of course at this price($175.00) it's not perfection but it's paid for itself many times over. Never had a bad shot out of the machine it's always good... sometimes great! Full disclosure I had a friends and family espresso catering and vending business in Seattle in the early 80s when Starbucks was just a itty-bitty bean roaster.
Summary: I had purchased the machine approx. 2 years earlier. As noted by prior reviews, and seems to be a re-occuring theme, worked well and made great espresso until the machine stopped functioning. The wand on the machine no longer functions. When I called up the customer service, they noted that warranty only covers 1 year and will have to send in otherwise for costly repair. I don't believe that an appliance should last only 2 years.
Summary: I love the simplicity with which you can make a good shot of espresso with minimum cleanup effort (great in the morning when you are in a rush to get to work). However, for a while now I've been experiencing problems with the lid of the machine not being able to close correctly, giving me the "red light of death". I have to make several attempts before I can get the lid to close correctly.
Summary: I have had my X8 for over 2.5 years and I run a lot of shots through it daily. I do feel a bit lucky that it is still working after seeing that others have had issues with their machines. For the quality of espresso and convenience I would get another machine, at the $175 price, even if it stopped working tomorrow. My only complaint with this machine is the water tank is a bit small due to compromise for aesthetics.
Summary: I've been tweaking my espresso method and taste over several years using my Gaggia Classic and grinder where I have full flexibility over the beans, grind, tamping, and brew volume. I could make an excellent Latte or Cappuccino in minutes, but wore an apron before leaving for work due to the messiness. Nevertheless, I really 'need' espresso at work.
Summary: Ok, it is a nice machine, better espresso than any other I've tried, but still not as good as a shot you get in any street shops in Italy. I loved the machine while it worked, was taking care of it religiously, and cleaning it every 3 month with illyusa.com recommended cleaners. At 17 months after the purchase the machine stopped pumping enough pressure and the water started leaking out of its base.
Summary: Do not waste your money on this and if you have an issue with a defective machine, dont expect kindness from their "no customer service" wow, they are rude. I didn't receive all the cans of pods I ordered and they dont believe me! Also the tray jams up and wont go up so if i make a small espresso cup it splashes all over and makes a mess. You have to fill the clumsy water reservoir every minute. I haven't even tried the frother/steamer yet.
Summary: Easy to use but you need to read instuctions first. not the video. after that it's easy and great espresso. also got free gifts from Illy. Francis Francis X8. it's better then any other model if you don't want to do the cleaning.
