Excerpt: Want to drink espressos that wouldn’t shame an Italian into ritual suicide? Then you need to invest in a proper coffee maker like this filter-based jobbie.
Pros: A typically cheap, cheerful little device from De’Longhi, the Bar14 actually has 15 bar of pressure. Neither sleek nor sexy, it’s a squat little fella with a 1 litre tank. It makes perfectly passable coffee, and is cheap and reliable, once you’re used to its foibles.
Cons: Although fine for your day-to-day caffeine-based tipple, the Bar14 is not going to satisfy connoisseurs. The steam nozzle is feeble beyond belief, the pressure isn’t sufficient to make a really flavoursome brew, and you struggle to get more than two cups out of it at a time, so it’s not one for the dinner party set. Oh, and it takes an age to warm up.
