The Sony Ericsson Z520i is the newest member in the budget-minded Z-series. The clamshell model is equipped with a practical feature set which includes the standard batch of organizers, Bluetooth, an infrared port, text and multimedia messaging, a web browser and email for POP3 and IMAP accounts. A 2-megapixel camera is affixed to the back of the handset and is capable of shooting pictures and taking videos. And once you record a still or a video clip you can share it using the Bluetooth via the QuickShare feature. There’s also a small media player included that can keep you entertained during travel. A few applications are also installed that can edit your media including music, pictures and videos.

Unfortunately, the phone lacks USB support and comes with a skinny 16 MB of internal memory. If you’re seriously considering this phone, you’ll also have to invest in a memory card. The performance is also expectedly slack. The phone’s interface a little too buggy and will certainly annoy you during power on. To irritate you further, the clamshell hinge is quite rough and you will sometimes have to resort to force to open the darn thing. The most disappointing feature, however, is the PC sync software which is ‘dead slow’ and will take you ages to transfer files. If you can get past these minor frustrations, you’ll probably be satisfied with the Z520i as other features are smooth and provide good value for its price tag.
