Despite a slick design, the 8.1-megapixel camera in the W955a fell well short of expectations. The evolution of the cell-phone camera takes yet another leap forward with the Sony Ericsson W995a. Along with a Walkman-branded digital music player, the W995a includes an 8.1 MP camera, the highest resolution camera yet available on a phone. But the W995a is an unlocked phone, which means its $600 price tag goes unsubsidized by a carrier. Read more

    • 8.1 MP camera; speedy Web access and full email access; external access and controls for camera and music; stereo speakers
    • Expensive; disappointing photos; anachronistic Ericsson connecting jack; below-average talk time

Last year was not very successful for Sony Ericsson and the company suffered some significant loss, but it seems that wasn´t an obstacle for its progress, since it announced , the Idou, back at . Along with it, the manufacturer also showcased some other models, which seem to have remained in Idou’s shadow. One of those devices was the slider , which we saw only for a while. Read more

The Sony Ericsson W995 gets things right in a few key ways that its primary competitors miss. As an unlocked multimedia super-phone, the real competition for the Sony Ericsson W995 is Nokia's Nseries, and in terms of the Walkman music player with the Media Go software, the W995 proves itself a capable Walkman (to check out recent Sony Ericsson Walkman phones, ). Since it isn't a smartphone, Sony Ericsson can keep a clean menu design in a way that Nokia cannot. Read more

    • Great music features, with an improved interface and management software. Surprisingly robust GPS features.
    • Doesn't quite measure up to similarly-equipped smartphones. Camera and Web browsing features come up short. Call quality and battery life disappoint.

The W995 is the first Walkman with a 3.5mm audio jack and we didn't miss the proprietary FastPort connector one single bit. The handset marries the celebrated traits of the Walkman player and imaging features on the Cyber-shot even though the latter still falls a little short of our expectations. It's great as a feature phone, but the middling screen size makes it less than appealing as a media player or for frequent Web browsing. Read more

    • Flimsy metal flip stand, bundled stereo headset still uses Fast Port connection with 3.5mm adapter, video capture at QVGA resolution, average image quality.

You'll probably know by now if you're a Sony Ericsson fan or not. The Sony Ericsson W995 suffers from all the same drawbacks as previous Walkman mobiles: it's walled off, and lacking the power and customisation of your standard smartphone. If that doesn't bother you though, what you'll find is one of the best multimedia phones on the market, and this time that includes picture taking. Read more

I have done a fair amount of research on this Sony W995a and have owned W series Sony phones for the last 8 years going back to the very early models. I have always enjoyed the walkman phones as a great sport phone even if i don't always use it as a primary phone. I can move my SIM and use it for biking, skiing, etc. My wife also enjoys the walkman phones as well. I really wanted to upgrade here to the W995a for Christmas. Read more

Love the phone for size and features. I'm not into the smart phone craze yet. I got the W995 one cos I liked my old W580, and I can use my old case, batteries and USB cable with the W995. Bought phone in HK while vacation. Phone was recently released when I bought it! Good call quality, decent media player (walkman), decent camera ONLY for day/closeup shots.
