The P990i is Sony Ericsson’s latest smart-phone and is the successor to the P910i. A major improvement is the addition of Wi-Fi and 3G/UMTS support which should put the P990i ahead of much competition. It also comes equipped with a full QWERTY keyboard which can be accessed by flipping down the numerical keypad. The phone runs Symbian OS 9.1 and provides a plethora of corporate tools like email, support for POP3, IMAP and SMTP accounts and remarkably, the Blackberry Connect. The model also features QuickOffice, an advanced tool which lets users view and edit Microsoft Office documents and view PDF files. Multimedia capabilities seem very impressive with a 2-megapixel camera that comes with a horde of exciting features including four resolutions, five distinct effects and a ton of editing tools. Also included are audio and video players that support a variety of formats and are very simple to use.

The performance of the P990i has been generally satisfactory but it does have its own quirks in some aspects. While most critics agree that the call quality is among the best in the market, drawbacks like poor productivity diminish the overall value. Info Sync World go so far as to say that document navigation on this phone is among the worst they’ve tested. Along with poor editing options, the P990i also suffers from bad controls which make navigation a real pain. Multimedia performance, however, is more than satisfying with good playback and excellent usability. The camera also performs well, producing clean, sharp images with very few flaws. Battery life is outstanding and in many test runs, went past the rated talktime. With highly professional features and solid capabilities, the P990i is probably the best choice of a tech-minded user, but the unusually expensive price tag requires customers to put some thought in before actually buying it.
