I have been using this phone on pay as you go for many years, as I neither need or desire a smartphone. It does everything I need. I was therefore horrified when I put my overalls in the washing machine at 60 deg C, only to hear a clonking noise from the machine, and to realise that the phone was in the top pocket. It went throught the full wash. On completion I removed the sim card and tried it in another phone - it was OK. I removed the micro SD card and that was intact. I left the phone on the window sill in the sun for two days until all the moisture had cleared from the display - put the battery back and connected the charger. The display showed charging and when full, I replaced the sim card, turned on the phone and to my amazement it worked perfectly! The phone memeory still had all numbers intact, and the calls list was still populated.
How cool is that ?. If you are ging to wash your phone, make sure it's a Z400!!

The Samsung SGH-Z400 slider phone has some impressive things going for it. A beautiful screen, 3G connectivity and video calling support, this phone is built for the business user. Other features include MMS and SMS messaging, a document viewer, an email client, a Web browser, Bluetooth, a voice recorder, Java games, a calendar, an alarm, a task list, memo, a world clock, a calculator and a converter. Unfortunately, there is no instant message support. Once you slide the silver Z400 open, you see the alphanumeric keypad, which is somewhat awkward to use. The small keys and curved design, makes it hard to press the right key. The Samsung SGH-Z400 is a 3G phone that lets you make video calls and access data over the air at near-broadband speeds. If a user is in an area that only has 2G networks, it supports both GPRS and EDGE. Voice quality on the phone is good, although there is some static and occasional dips in sound. Also, the phone’s reception indicator only showed three out of five bars, while other phones reported full signal strength. The phone supports vibration, MP3 and polyphonic rings, and breaks alerts into profiles. A small but interesting feature is the Connection Vibration mode, which vibrates the phone when a user connects or disconnects from a call. This comes in handy when a user is waiting for a call to connect but doesn't want to hold the handset to their ear.

Video calling and Web browsing worked well on the phone and the video call interface is straightforward to use. Video calls were as clear as can be expected over a 3G connection and the images were recognizable. The SGH-Z400 includes a 2-megapixel camera on the back for taking pictures or video. The camera interface includes quick succession or mosaic options, and the ability to turn the image black and white or invert the colors. The 2.0-megapixel camera took clear photos when held very still but images were blurred if the camera wasn’t holding it steady. There's no flash, so taking photos at night is impossible without an external light source. Although there is an advantage in the fact that the camera is protected behind the slide to avoid scratching, there is also no flash or LED photo light. The MP3 player is basic, with only adjustments to the play mode and volume available. Users can also store pictures, video and music on microSD cards. Although the Samsung SGH-Z400 is differentiating itself with video conferencing, the demand for that is low for non-business users.
