Samsung Blue Earth

Samsung steps up in its move to go greener with the Blue Earth handset. Made from PCM, a recycled plastic from water bottles, the phone boast an “eco” mode for efficiently adjusting screen brightness, backlight duration and Bluetooth usage, and an “eco walk” app / built-in. It also has a solar panel on the back that charges it enough to make a phone call and will come in recycled packaging with an energy efficient charger as well.

Features

Samsung Electronics has unveiled a solar-powered full touch screen phone called “Blue Earth”. PR quip has it as a phone that “symbolise a flat and well rounded shiny pebble”. The Blue Earth has the capability to charge up via the solar panel on the back of the phone, generating enough electronic power to make a call. The Blue Earth is also made from a recycled plastic called PCM, which is extracted from water bottles. The handset, and its charger, is free from substances such as Brominated Flame Retardants, Beryllium and Phthalate. The user interface is designed with screen brightness, backlight duration and Bluetooth that can be adjusted in an energy-efficient mode called “Eco mode”. It also features an “eco walk” function that lets the user count their steps with an in-built pedometer, calculating how much CO2 emissions that have been reduced (and therefore how many trees have been saved) by walking as opposed to taking the car. The Samsung Blue Earth will be available in the UK during the second half of 2009.
