2 years later, STILL GREAT!
Fried Wonton "FW", Amazon
17 May 2014
Summary: I bought this from another vendor back in 2011 (it was $178 at the time -- the cheapest name brand smart phone....price has gone down significantly!). Then I bought another one for my mom in 2012 from Amazon. Unfortunately she lost it a year later. My phone still runs great 3 years later. It got dropped, tossed, and kicked. I've dropped it a few times on concrete to the point where the back case and battery popped out; yet it still worked without issues.
Summary: My main motivation for buying this phone was it cost less than having a cracked screen repaired. No problems connecting to Rogers and WiFi. Android 2.1 is easy to use, but is getting a little old (4yrs next Jan). Some newer apps (eg.Dropbox, Angry Birds) won't install, but there are other games available. Not a lot of internal memory, but a $12 32Gb memory card fixed that. The screen isn't very big, but the phone didn't cost $600, which balances that out.
Excerpt: Galaxy 5 is one of the best Android phones of its time. Performed well, supported most of the apps while it existed in competition. Later did not even supported the Angry Birds game which was there for the phone earlier. In-built storage was not adequate to accommodate more than just a few of the apps. Used the phone as my first smartphone and is pretty impressed with the battery performance, design, call quality, interface and music.
Excerpt: Just bought it last year and it is a remarkable phone! It could support the latest andriod 4.1 with many things scaled down. (find how yourselves) Battery life is so-so after kept listening to music and reading comics, but shockingly long when left it by itself(lasted about 4 days without offing it). Games on it is nice as it could run Gameloft games.
Pros: great for gaming, sleek, sturdy build, good battery life, standard music player with 3.5mm jack, cheap, light, CM mod ready (google cyanogen mod for galay 5 if you do not understand my post)
Cons: irritating samsung apps that is never used, Armv6 cpu, small screen, is not upgraded to andriod 2.3
Excerpt: If you are looking with a good smartphone with lots of features than this is a great phone for you. It comes with android 2.2 and can be found on Amazon for under $150 for an unlocked phone. I have had mine since Feb. 2012 and have dropped it once 3 feet off the table onto a tile floor (the back popped off and the battery fell out but other than that it was fine and did not receive any major damage) :) If you do buy this phone you will want to also get a protective cover...
Pros: Price is excellent, Light and Easy to Handle
Cons: Does not support flash, No front camera. Cant make video calls
Summary: I bought these phones (2 ea.) as gifts for some friends in Kenya. I did not operationally check the phones until I got to Kenya, which was a mistake. It turnrd out that one of the phone would not recognize micro memory card so it usefulness was extremely limitied.
Samsung GT-i5500 (Good performance except the battery life)

Excerpt: I bought it from ebay.com in Jan 2011 and brought it to India. Was looking stylish compared to the contemporary models. While it was working fine. The bar was getting hot (upto 40-45C) when on charge. The battery goes dry faster. I had to charge every 8 hours. If you have some application like graphical games etc., you can see the phone dying while playing it self! Nowaday, the touch-reponse has also come down drastically.
