Samsung Conquer 4G – Sprint’s WiMAX-enabled smartphone for the price conscious buyer
14 September 2011
Excerpt: Sprint has a pretty impressive smartphone lineup this year, with something major supposedly coming to the network in the first half of October, according to rumors (and the fact that Sprint sent out a memo informing their employees that they can’t get a vacation break between September 30th and October 15th).
Summary: The Samsung Conquer 4G, the latest addition to Sprint’s blazing-fast lineup. Rather than going head-to-head with giants like the Photon 4G and EVO 3D, the company’s strategy is to offer a WiMAX-enabled handset that’s light on the wallet. Samsung Conquer 4G MicroUSB cable with AC adaptor 2GB microSD card.
Pros: Zippy performance, Good front facing camera, Near pure Android OS, Good battery life
Cons: Small display, Low-res primary camera, Boring design
Conclusion: If you want an affordable 4G Sprint phone and have no desire for the thicker hardware QWERTY slider designs, the Samsung Conquer 4G is a well-equipped phone for $99 with contract. The year old HTC EVO 4G sells for the same price and it offers a larger, higher resolution display, but it is last year's model, and it has a much larger footprint and shorter battery life.
Conclusion: The Samsung Conquer 4G reminds us very much of the LG Optimus One in that it does what it is supposed to do well without costing an arm and a leg. The Conquer has 4G data, it has a fast processor and lots of memory but it isn’t fancy. The EVO family, the Photon , the Epic …they all try and be show stoppers. Samsung didn’t have to wow anyone with the Conquer 4G, but in the process of making an affordable, serviceable phone they managed to wow us quite pleasantly.
Pros: Very fast performance, Great call quality, Good build quality, size and feel, Lots of available memory, Not bogged down with manufacturer skins or carrier bloatware
Cons: Display could be denser, Camera performs poorly in low light conditions
