N900: A Geek's best friend

studentatcal, Viewpoints
9 September 2012
  • Excerpt: This phone is built for, meant for and bought by geeks. But first, let's start with the screen. It's not Super AMOLED like the Samsung Galaxy S, but it does have the SAME exact screen resolution, a 800x480 pixel count, as the Galaxy S phones. The screen works really well outside in the sun and there is not a very prominent glare like the Iphone.

Incredible potential. Substandard execution.

  • Summary: I pre-ordered my N900 the moment I found out about it, back in September. And I patiently waited, and waited, while watching every demo, preview, and review I could find. With each passing day, I knew I was closer to mobile bliss. And one day, my N900 arrived. Sadly, it didn't really deliver. Having (briefly) owned an N97 , I was incredibly disappointed to discover that Nokia has tried their hardest to port elements of Symbian phones to the Maemo platform.

  • Excerpt: i saw this phone and said why not. i gave it a shot. it didn't impress me that much at first but after some firmware updates its ok. the speakers could have been louder. the touch screen is smooth most of the time.the keyboard is a bit too small for fingers. i'm kinda mashing more than one button at a time.the camera disappoints compared to previous generation cameras on other N series nokia's.what happened to Xenon? would it have been that hard to put it on this?

  • Summary: I like the size of my Nokia, but I wish they get some new ring tones. It seems that everyone has the same ring tones. When in public you never know who's phone is ringing.

Nokia N900...

  • Conclusion: The N900 might not be an iPhone killer, and it might not be a perfect Netbook/Phone combo yet, but with the Maemo operating system Nokia has laid the groundwork for a great range of devices in the future.
  • Pros: At first glance the N900 seems impressive. It has a 600MHz Arm Cortex CPU, 256MB of ram and 32GB of onboard storage, with a high resolution, crystal clear 3.5in screen. Naturally, it also has all the basics for a smartphone of this calibre, which means 3G, Bluetooth 2.0, USB connector, and 802.11g wi-fi. The N900 even has a built-in FM transmitter for listening to your music over your car stereo wirelessly.
  • Cons: Firstly, it feels very plasticky, almost like the inside of a Corsa Utility van. Apart from the nice smooth screen the rest of the N900 just doesn’t feel solid.

N900 Car Bluetooth - not really

Colin 28, Amazon
1 August 2010
  • Summary: Great phone, BUT many cars now come with a bluetooth connection for hands-free operation of your phone. The N900 makes the connection OK in my Audi A4, but doesn't load my contacts into the car's handsfree system. This makes it almost useless as you have to dial the numbers manually. According to Nokia's Support Discussions, this also affect hands-free via TomTom sat navs etc. as well as Minis, Jags (& Audis) and even Nokia's own HF-510 Speakerphone.
