The inexpensive Nokia 6030 is a phone for those looking for a no-frills candy-bar style cell. This slender black phone slips easily into a pocket. small (128-by-128) color screen is dim and the black buttons are small, although well separated. The screen is actually better outdoors than in, since it does a good job of absorbing sunlight without reflecting it. Indoors, the display is dim without the backlight. Voice quality on the dual-band GSM is terrific. Although there was some background hiss, but voices were loud, clear, and sharp, and the surprisingly muscular speakerphone was usable indoors and out. Transmission quality when using the microphone was razor-sharp but sounded a bit muddy through the speakerphone. MIDI and MP3 ringtones were very loud, though the vibrating motor wasn't all that powerful. Signal reception was in the medium range.

Battery life was excellent, with 15 hours of talk time under ideal conditions A WAP 2.0 browser that connects to Cingular's Media Net portal is also included, but Web access is very slow and close to unusable. Organizational tools include an alarm clock, a calendar, a to-do list, notes, a calculator, a stopwatch, and a countdown timer. There's also a built-in FM radio, which requires a headset to work. Users can personalize the Nokia 6030 with a variety of themes, wallpaper, screensavers, graphics, and alert tones. Java (J2ME) games included with the phone are Block Breaker, Club Pinball, and Tetris. The meager 512KB of onboard memory won't hold many games or ringtones, though, and there is no expansion slot. There's no camera and no way to hook to a PC to sync contacts or use the phone as a modem. For those wanting an inexpensive phone with limited multimedia, the Nokia 6030 fits the bill nicely.
