Nokia 5300

Nokia’s 5300 mobile phone is part of the Finnish company’s product line of phones specifically designed for playing music called Xpress Music. The Nokia 5300 Xpress Music Phone was released in the latter half of 2006.

The 5300 comes with a two inch QVGA (240 x 320 pixels) resolution TFT LCD screen capable of displaying 262k colors. The device measures in at 3.6 x 1.9 x 0.8 inches, with a weight of 3.7 ounces and comes in a sliding form factor. The built in camera at the back is a 1.3 megapixel unit that can snap photos at a maximum resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels and record video at QCIF (176 x 144 pixels) resolution.

As with the rest of the Xpress Music lineup of mobile phones, the 5300 comes with a microSD (TransFlash) memory slot. With the microSD slot, the phone can be bumped up to a maximum capacity of 2 GB of hot-swappable memory. Out of the box, the 5300 comes with 5 MB of internal memory and an included microSD memory card (size varies depending on the region).

Main Features

The Nokia 5300 is a very capable music player because of its Xpress Music lineage. The phone features dedicated hardware media buttons that are situated around the display, a 3.5 mm audio jack, mini USB port and support for stereo Bluetooth. It also comes with Nokia’s Music Manager software for managing songs and transferring them between the phone and a PC. The 5300’s music player can play back audio files in the following formats: MP3, AAC, eAAC+, AAC+, WMA and Midi.

Other notable features include FM Radio support, Visual Radio and the ability to personalize the integrated music player with skins.

Review Summary

The Nokia 5300 Xpress Music entered the market in a slider-style model and is regarded by critics as one of the best multimedia phones in existence. Once into the phone, users will find all the basic features they’d expect including email and instant messaging. There are also a number of business features like PC syncing, a speakerphone and a mini-USB port. But the music player is the main selling-point of the Nokia 5300 Xpress Music with a highly flexible media player which can playback a variety of formats and allows users to painlessly transfer their music onto the phone. Other options like the equalizer, stereo widening and the media library, along with the included stereo Bluetooth boost the overall value. Also equipped is a 1.3-megapixel camera which shoots images in six resolutions and videos in two resolutions. The camera also includes a variety of quality and image settings.

According to CNET, the music quality of the 5300 Xpress Music far surpasses that of most other phones. Test runs showed good clarity even at high volumes and the music sounded great, both in the inbuilt stereo speakers and earphones. The call quality is also excellent, with little or no distortion and only a few complaints have been left about background noise and slightly low volume. The 1.3-megapixel camera produces decent images for its class but with faded colors. Video clips are mediocre, however, and look quite grainy. Battery life is delivered as promised with a talktime of 3 hours and standby of 9 days. Overall, the Nokia 5300 Xpress Music sports very impressive features and delivers a distinct musical experience. That being said, the phone is highly recommended for anyone looking for a multimedia handset.
